Description
Enveja is a homunculus, an artificial being created by the entity known as Father to serve as one of his primary agents. As a manifestation of the sin of envy, this character is defined by a deep-seated jealousy of humanity, a trait that fuels its cruel and sadistic actions throughout the story.
The exact origins of Enveja lie in the destruction of the ancient kingdom of Xerxes. Father created this homunculus using a Philosopher's Stone, which is composed of countless human souls, and it is the fourth of the seven homunculi representing the deadly sins. In its preferred humanoid form, Enveja appears as an androgynous and effeminate young person with long, dark hair and is typically barefoot. This chosen form reflects a certain vanity, as Enveja dislikes any insult to its appearance and considers itself beautiful.
Beneath this attractive surface lies a profoundly cruel and spiteful personality. Enveja revels in the suffering of humans, viewing them as weak, foolish, and easy to manipulate. It frequently mocks its opponents and takes sadistic pleasure in causing emotional as well as physical pain. True to its namesake, Enveja secretly envies humanity for their resilience, their ability to form genuine friendships, and the inner strength that allows them to overcome adversity. This contradiction is central to its character: it despises humans for their perceived weakness while coveting the very qualities that make them strong.
Enveja's primary motivation is to serve Father's grand plan to sacrifice the entire nation of Amestris in exchange for godhood. To this end, it carries out acts of assassination and mass manipulation, often for its own amusement rather than out of any strict loyalty. One of its most significant acts was sparking the horrific Ishvalan civil war. By disguising itself as an Amestrian soldier who had publicly opposed the military's occupation, Enveja shot and killed an Ishvalan child, an act that ignited a bloody conflict that led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands. It later brags about this event, marveling at how easy it was to manipulate an entire nation into war. Enveja is also directly responsible for the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes. After Hughes discovered the homunculi's conspiracy, Enveja cornered him, transformed into his wife Gracia, and shot him dead, an act that would have devastating consequences for Hughes's close friend, Roy Mustang.
Enveja's primary role in the narrative is that of a spy, saboteur, and field operative for Father. Its shapeshifting powers make it an unparalleled infiltrator, allowing it to impersonate anyone from military officers to civilians to beloved family members. It is frequently tasked with creating chaos, killing those who get too close to the truth, and gathering information.
In its relationships with other homunculi, Enveja displays some complexity. While it often mocks its siblings, it does seem to share a bond with them, as seen when it mourns the death of Lust and expresses disgust when Pride devours Gluttony without remorse. This suggests that despite its inhuman cruelty, Enveja is not entirely devoid of loyalty to its own kind. Its greatest enmity is reserved for humans, particularly Edward Elric and Roy Mustang. It develops a rivalry with Edward after several encounters and enjoys taunting him about his small stature. With Mustang, the dynamic is one of pure hatred, as Mustang learns of Enveja's role in his best friend's murder.
Throughout the series, Enveja undergoes a notable but tragic development. Initially presented as a supremely confident and formidable antagonist, its arrogance is repeatedly shattered in confrontations with skilled human fighters like Lan Fan and Ling Yao. Overconfident in its immortality and powers, Enveja is often outsmarted and physically beaten, leading to bouts of frustration and rage. A significant turning point occurs when it is tricked by Doctor Tim Marcoh, who uses alchemy to destroy the Philosopher's Stone at its core, reducing it to a small, helpless, worm-like parasitic form.
The climax of its character arc comes after it is captured by its enemies. When confronted by a vengeful Roy Mustang, Enveja is brutally and repeatedly incinerated, forced to regenerate until its Philosopher's Stone is nearly exhausted. It is saved from death not by an ally, but by Edward Elric, who stops Mustang from becoming a murderer driven by revenge. In its final moments, Enveja attempts to sow discord among its captors by highlighting their past grievances against one another. When this fails, Edward Elric voices the truth that Enveja has always been jealous of the very humans it claims to despise, envious of their ability to form bonds and rise again after falling. Unable to bear this humiliation, Enveja tears the Philosopher's Stone from its own core, committing suicide rather than accepting the pity or understanding of a human.
Enveja possesses several notable abilities. As a homunculus with a Philosopher's Stone as its core, it has immense regenerative capabilities and is functionally immortal unless the souls within its stone are depleted. Its signature power is shapeshifting, allowing it to transform into any person or animal, perfectly mimicking their voice and appearance. It can also partially transform its limbs into weapons or tools. When truly threatened or enraged, Enveja unleashes its true monstrous form: a gigantic, multi-limbed, dragon-like creature with a long tail, whose body is covered with the faces and torsos of the countless souls trapped within its Philosopher's Stone. In this state, it possesses immense physical strength and durability. A unique limitation of its transformation is that its mass does not change; it always weighs as much as its colossal true form, causing the ground to crack beneath its feet. When its Philosopher's Stone is critically damaged, Enveja is reduced to its smallest, most pitiful shape: a tiny, green, parasitic creature similar to a leech or worm, which can only survive by taking control of a host body. This final form represents the ugly, pathetic core of its jealousy, stripped of all its power and pretensions.
