Description
Orgull, also referred to as Pride in the original version of the series, is a major antagonist in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. He is the first Homunculus created by Father, the leader of the artificial beings known as Homunculi, and he embodies the sin of pride. Because he was shaped from Father's own arrogance and contempt for others, he is the oldest of the Homunculi and serves as Father's second-in-command. He is also considered the strongest of Father's creations. Although he is ancient, he appears as a small boy, and for most of the story he lives under the public identity of Selim Bradley, the adopted son of Führer King Bradley.

His background is tied directly to Father's long-running plan. Father created the Homunculi by drawing on his own vices, and Orgull represents the part of Father that regarded everything else as beneath him. Placed in the Bradley household as a distant relative adopted into the Führer's family, Orgull spent years posing as a devoted and lively child. As Selim he idolizes his adoptive father, writes admiring school reports about him, expresses a wish to become a State Alchemist, and claims to be a great admirer of Edward Elric. This innocent image allows him to move through the highest circles of the military government without suspicion, and it is eventually revealed that he has been observing events and reporting back to Father the entire time.

Beneath the mask, Orgull's true personality is arrogant, cruel, and deeply prejudiced. He regards human beings as insects or playthings and considers anyone who is not a Homunculus worthless. In battle he is contemptuous and mocking, and his firm belief in his own superiority often leads him to underestimate his opponents. Even his fellow Homunculi dislike him: Envy considers him selfish and insufferable, and Greed describes him as a monster. He loves the honor of being a Homunculus and encourages his brothers to share his hatred of humanity. Yet his personality is not entirely without feeling. He develops a genuine attachment to Mrs. Bradley, his adoptive mother, and when she risks her life to protect him, he is deeply moved by the experience and later remembers those moments of family life.

His motivations are centered on loyalty to Father and belief in Homunculus supremacy. He wants nothing more than to see Father's ambitions fulfilled, and he treats lesser beings as tools to be used and discarded. His main function within Father's plan is to safeguard the ritual that requires five alchemists who have crossed the Gate of Truth, and he goes as far as forcing Roy Mustang and the gold-toothed doctor to perform human transmutation so that Father's scheme can proceed. His cruelty is practical as well as personal: when it suits him, he kills and absorbs his own kin to acquire their abilities.

His true nature is uncovered when Riza Hawkeye realizes that Selim's adoption story does not add up, and from that point he acts openly as one of the most dangerous enemies in the series. He takes part in the conflict beneath Central against Edward and Alphonse Elric and their allies, and twice demonstrates how far he is willing to go. He devours his fellow Homunculus Gluttony to gain Gluttony's sensory abilities, justifying the act by claiming that Gluttony was originally part of him anyway. Later, he absorbs the state alchemist Solf J. Kimblee so that he can make use of Kimblee's talent for transmutation. His relationship with King Bradley is a strange mixture of alliance and false family bond, since both are Homunculi playing roles within the same household, while his bond with Mrs. Bradley is the one genuinely human connection he forms. His principal opponent is Edward Elric, whose resourcefulness and willingness to sacrifice himself stand in direct opposition to Orgull's arrogance.

His defeat comes at Edward's hands. When his human-shaped container is destroyed during the confrontation beneath Central, Orgull's true form is exposed and he panics at the thought of dying, calling out for his adoptive mother. Edward, who has transformed himself into a human Philosopher's Stone, overpowers Orgull's soul and strips him of his power and his memories. After Father is destroyed, Edward returns Orgull's body to a weeping Mrs. Bradley. Two years later, Orgull has grown and once again goes by the name Selim Bradley, but now he behaves as a normal, gentle child who cares for an injured bird and shows no sign of remembering his past as a Homunculus. He is the only one of Father's Homunculi to survive, and his ending reverses his original nature: the being who despised weakness is reduced to the fragile, ordinary human existence he once mocked.

As a Homunculus, Orgull is sustained by a Philosopher's Stone and can regenerate from injuries. His unique ability is control over shadows. His true form is a living black mass covered in eyes and mouths, resembling Father's original form as the being in the flask. He absorbs light and extends his body as shadow-like tendrils that can grab, slice, restrain, and consume. The eyes and mouths scattered throughout his shadow allow him to see, speak, and attack from many directions at once, and through the nationwide transmutation circle connected to Father's plan, his awareness can stretch across the entire country of Amestris. He can also absorb other creatures into himself and inherit their abilities, as he does with Gluttony and Kimblee. However, his power depends on the presence of shadows near his body. In complete darkness he cannot act at all, and intense light, such as a flash grenade, causes his shadow extensions to wither and vanish. His childlike body is only a vessel, and when wounded he does not bleed like an ordinary living being, since the body is essentially hollow and contains only his true shadow self.
