Description
In the story of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Gola, whose true name is Gluttony, is one of the seven homunculi, artificial beings created by the entity known as Father. He is distinguished as the embodiment of the sin of gluttony. Gola is a male homunculus and is approximately one hundred years old, though his physical appearance remains childlike and unchanging.

Gola's physical appearance is the most cartoonish among his siblings. He is bald and has a disproportionate body, characterized by long arms, large hands, and short legs. His build is noticeably heavy and round. His eyes are small, white, and round, similar to his brother Sloth. His simple and distinctive outfit consists of a tight, sleeveless black jumpsuit and black wristbands. His most unique feature is the location of his Ouroborus mark, the symbol that signifies a homunculus, which is tattooed on his tongue.

In terms of personality, Gola is initially presented as surprisingly docile and gentle compared to his more malevolent siblings. He displays an unmistakable childishness and a genuine, innocent affection for his brothers and sisters, particularly for Lust, who acts as his constant partner and handler. He is, however, prone to uncontrollable fits of frenzy driven by his overwhelming hunger. During these episodes, he will mindlessly attempt to devour anything and anyone in his path. His intelligence is notably limited, and he lacks self-control, which makes him dependent on his more aware siblings, especially Lust, to guide him. Despite his monstrous actions, he often asks permission before consuming someone, showing a lack of malice, and he does not seem to comprehend that the people he eats die permanently. He once mentioned a preference for eating young girls, whom he finds softer and more flavorful.

Gola's primary motivation is simply to satisfy his endless and insatiable hunger. He is entirely driven by the desire to eat, whether it be humans, chimeras, or any other matter. Beyond this basic compulsion, his only other goal is to carry out the wishes of his creator, Father.

Within the story, Gola serves Father as a spy, a tracker, and an agent for eliminating evidence. His role is largely that of a powerful weapon and a beast of burden, sent on missions alongside Lust to consume obstacles or witnesses. His most significant role in the plot is as a threat that must be overcome. In a pivotal moment, the protagonists Edward Elric and Ling Yao, as well as the homunculus Envy, are trapped inside Gola's body. In this state, Gola reveals his true form, not just as a gluttonous monster, but as a failed, artificial copy of the Gate of Truth. His torso opens up like a massive, tooth-filled mouth, and a large, sinister eye appears within the cavity. Everything this form inhales is sent not into a stomach, but into an infinite, pocket dimension created by Father, from which there is no logical escape. The group only manages to escape with the help of the Philosopher's Stone within Envy.

Gola's most significant relationship is with his sister Lust. He is constantly at her side, follows her orders without question, and is deeply attached to her, showing immense sadness after her death. He interacts with other homunculi as siblings, including Envy, Greed, Wrath, Sloth, and Pride. He shows respect for his creator, Father, and also served Dante in a previous existence. Despite his simplicity, he demonstrates a moment of respect for Edward Elric by honoring his request not to devour Ling Yao.

Gola undergoes a specific form of character regression rather than positive development. After he is defeated in battle and his Philosopher's Stone is exhausted, he can no longer regenerate. His essence is ultimately reabsorbed by Father. Gola's notable abilities are all linked to his unique physiology as a homunculus. He possesses enhanced strength, speed, and durability, making him a formidable hand-to-hand combatant capable of fighting skilled opponents like Scar or Alphonse Elric. His most famous ability is his corrosive saliva and digestive enzymes, which allow him to eat and dissolve virtually any substance, including solid steel. He also has a rapid regeneration factor, allowing him to instantly heal from any wound, including decapitation or incineration, as long as he has souls within his Philosopher's Stone core. However, his greatest and most terrifying power is transforming his body into the false Gate of Truth, granting him the ability to consume anything, and anyone, in a way that transcends normal physical limits.
