TV-Series
Description
Elicia Hughes is the young daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes and his wife, Gracia Hughes. She is a resident of Central City, the capital of Amestris. As the apple of her father's eye, her unfathomable adorableness is the primary subject of most of Maes' casual conversation, and a photograph of her is an omnipresent accessory that he proudly shows to virtually everyone he meets, much to their constant annoyance. In terms of appearance, Elicia is a small child with brown hair that is typically tied up in pigtails by two blue beads on each side, and she has forest-green eyes, traits she inherited from her mother.
Elicia’s personality is that of a sweet, innocent, and genuinely enthusiastic young girl. She is precocious for her age, fumbling over her numbers with an earnest charm that immediately endears her to others. When she first properly meets Winry Rockbell at her third birthday party, her cheerful and welcoming nature quickly forms a bond between them, with Winry coming to see the toddler as a little sister. Elicia also displays a playful side, as shown when she playfully teases Edward Elric by calling him "little" upon their first meeting.
Her primary role in the story is a poignant one, serving as the emotional heart of her family's tragedy. The most impactful moment for her character occurs at her father's funeral. Being too young to understand the finality of death, she is confused and devastated, sadly demanding that the men stop burying her father so he can return to his job. This heartbreaking plea resonates deeply with the other characters and the audience, highlighting the senseless loss caused by Maes Hughes' murder. Later, still struggling to comprehend his absence, she excitedly answers the door calling for "Papa," only to have her joy shatter into sadness when she sees it is not him.
Despite her grief, Elicia retains her innocent kindness and demonstrates emotional strength. On one occasion, after a visit from Winry, she is clearly heard in the background begging her mother not to cry, showing a desire to comfort Gracia even while dealing with her own sorrow. Her key relationships are primarily with her parents. Her father dotes on her obsessively, while her mother provides a calm and loving presence. She also shares a significant surrogate sister relationship with Winry Rockbell and is acquainted with the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, who are friends of her father.
Throughout the series, Elicia shows subtle signs of development. By the final chapter, several years have passed, and she appears as an older child when Alphonse Elric visits her and her mother one last time, indicating her growth beyond the tragic events of her early childhood. In the climactic events known as the Promised Day, she and her mother fall victim to a nationwide transmutation circle but are successfully brought back to life thanks to a countermeasure.
As a very young civilian child with no alchemical or military training, Elicia possesses no notable abilities or combat skills. Her significance lies entirely in her role as a symbol of lost innocence and the personal cost of the conflict within the story.
