Movie
Description
Doto Kazehana serves as the primary antagonist in the first feature film of the Naruto series. He is the ruthless ruler of the Land of Snow, having seized control through a violent coup d'état against his own family. Before the events of the movie, Doto led a rebellion in search of a legendary treasure, which culminated in him murdering his older brother, Sosetsu Kazehana, who was the rightful daimyo, or leader, of the Land of Snow. This act of betrayal forced his young niece, Koyuki Kazehana, to flee her homeland, eventually adopting the hidden identity of a famous actress named Yukie Fujikaze.
Doto's personality is defined by an unquenchable thirst for power and a complete lack of empathy. He is depicted as cold-hearted, arrogant, and power-hungry, willing to betray his own family and cause immense suffering to achieve his ambitions. While he often appears calm and calculating, this demeanor can quickly give way to a murderous rage when his goals are thwarted. He has a cruel and sadistic streak, famously laughing maniacally as his subordinates slaughter loyal warriors who attempt to stand against him. His ultimate motivation is not merely to rule the Land of Snow; his ambition extends to amassing enough power to challenge and overthrow the Five Great Shinobi Countries themselves.
In the story, Doto's primary goal is to retrieve a special crystal necklace that Koyuki possesses. He believes this necklace is the key to unlocking a hidden treasure that will grant him the army he needs for his conquest. His role in the plot is set in motion when Team Kakashi is assigned to protect the actress Yukie Fujikaze, unaware that she is actually the fugitive princess Koyuki. Doto and his subordinates pursue the team, eventually capturing Koyuki and her guards on a fortified train. He later captures Naruto Uzumaki and subjects him to a chakra-draining device, forcing Koyuki to hand over what he believes is the real crystal necklace.
The key relationship in Doto's story is with his niece, Koyuki. He is directly responsible for her orphaned state and the emotional trauma that has haunted her for a decade. For him, she is not family but simply a means to an end, a vessel for the treasure he covets. His other significant relationships are with his subordinates, Nadare Roga, Fubuki Kakuyoku, and Mizore Fuyukuma, who are loyal to him and wear similar, albeit less powerful, chakra armor.
Doto undergoes little personal development, remaining a single-minded villain throughout the narrative. His defeat, however, triggers a significant change in the Land of Snow. In the final confrontation, he takes Koyuki to a rainbow-colored glacier to claim his treasure. When the necklace is inserted, it does not reveal a cache of weapons or gold, but instead activates a massive underground generator designed to turn the frozen country into a land of eternal spring. This revelation enrages Doto, who only sees the power he could have wielded. He is eventually defeated by Naruto, who uses a powerful Seven-Colored Rasengan to shatter Doto's chakra armor and send him crashing into the generator wall. This impact breaks the ice covering the land, finally fulfilling the late Sosetsu Kazehana's wish to bring spring to his country.
Doto is a skilled shinobi in his own right, though he typically prefers to let his subordinates fight first. His most notable ability is his mastery of ice release techniques, allowing him to manipulate snow and ice to form powerful attacks, such as the Twin Dragon Blizzard technique which creates massive dragons of black ice. His greatest asset is a unique, black prototype Chakra Armour, which grants him exceptional defense. This armor makes him nearly impervious to ninjutsu and genjutsu, allowing him to withstand powerful attacks like Sasuke's Chidori, which only manages to crack its surface. The armor also enhances his own physical strength, enabling him to shatter thick ice with a single blow, and is equipped with wings that allow him to glide. Beyond his physical abilities, Doto is a crafty strategist who meticulously plans his operations, demonstrating his intelligence in his preparations for the arrival of Team Kakashi.
