Description
Doto Kazahana serves as the primary antagonist of the first Naruto film. He is the former ruler of the Land of Snow, having seized control through treachery and violence. Doto is the younger brother of Sosetsu Kazahana, the rightful daimyo, and the uncle of Princess Koyuki Kazahana.
Driven by an insatiable ambition for power, Doto organized a coup against his own family. He hired snow ninja to instigate the violent uprising, which resulted in the burning of the Kazahana residence and the murder of his brother along with other relatives. Following this bloody takeover, Doto declared himself the new daimyo of the Land of Snow, a country he kept locked in a perpetual, harsh winter during his reign.
Doto's personality is defined by cruelty, selfishness, and arrogance. He is singularly obsessed with obtaining enough power to eventually overthrow the Five Great Shinobi Nations. He displays a complete lack of empathy or remorse, callously laughing while his subordinates slaughter those who resist him. This sadistic nature extends to his treatment of his own niece, Koyuki. He shows no concern for her well-being, seeing her only as a means to an end. When frustrated or betrayed, his calm demeanor gives way to visible rage and unhinged fury.
His primary motivation throughout the story is the acquisition of a special hexagonal crystal. Doto believes this crystal is the key to unlocking a vast hidden fortune left behind by the Kazahana clan. He intends to use this treasure to fund a powerful army to achieve his goal of conquering the great nations. His relentless pursuit of this prize is what drives the plot, as he tracks Koyuki, who possesses the heirloom.
In the story, Doto first appears in his fortress before confronting Team Kakashi and Koyuki on a moving train. He demonstrates his ruthlessness by authorizing a deadly rain of kunai against Koyuki's loyal protectors. Throughout the film, he uses his elite snow ninja subordinates, including the powerful Nadare Roga, to capture the princess. Doto personally oversees the torture of Naruto Uzumaki using a device that drains his chakra. Upon receiving what he believes to be the correct crystal, he drags Koyuki to the Rainbow Glacier to claim his reward. His key relationships are adversarial; he is the hated usurper to Koyuki and the man responsible for the death of her father, making him the central obstacle for both Koyuki and the protecting ninja.
Doto experiences no moral redemption. His development is that of a tyrant whose obsession blinds him to the truth. Upon reaching the treasure site, he is enraged to discover there is no weapon or fortune. Instead, the crystal activates a massive heating system designed by his late brother to transform the Land of Snow into the Land of Spring. The entire Kazahana fortune had already been spent to build these generators for the good of the country, revealing his quest for power to be ultimately futile.
Despite this revelation, Doto remains a formidable adversary due to his notable abilities. He is a skilled shinobi who can perform powerful Ice Release techniques, such as manipulating the surrounding snow and ice to form massive twin dragon constructs to assault his enemies. His most significant asset is a black, prototype chakra armor. This armor provides immense defensive capabilities, making him highly resistant to both ninjutsu and genjutsu. It is strong enough to nearly negate a direct Chidori from Sasuke Uchiha, sustaining only a crack. His physical strength is also considerable, as he can shatter thick ice with a single punch. His end comes when Naruto, empowered by his Nine-Tails chakra, strikes him with a new Seven-Colored Rasengan, an attack powerful enough to shatter the armor completely and send him crashing into a generator wall, finally bringing an end to his reign of winter.
