Description
Meiko Akizuki is the best friend and primary confidante of the protagonist, Miki Koishikawa. She is a student at the same high school and has been close with Miki since they met in middle school. Miki initially admired Meiko for her beauty and sophisticated, mature demeanor, which stands in stark contrast to Miki's own more emotional and expressive nature.

Meiko comes from a wealthy family and lives in a large house, but her home life is troubled and dysfunctional. Both of her parents are involved in extramarital affairs, yet they refuse to divorce each other in an effort to maintain social appearances. Consequently, their relationship is filled with constant fighting, forcing Meiko to endure a tense and unhappy household environment. This difficult family situation is a key factor in shaping her reserved personality; she is used to keeping her troubles to herself rather than sharing them with her peers.

In terms of her interests and daily life at school, Meiko is a dedicated member of the Literary Club and is often found spending her time in the old school library. She is an avid reader and a talented writer, with a strong ambition to become a novelist. She is generally portrayed as intelligent, well-mannered, and perceptive, often acting as a counselor for Miki, offering advice on love and personal problems.

A central part of Meiko's personal storyline involves her secret romantic feelings for Shinichi Namura, a young and kind teacher at the school. While their relationship is not physical, it is an inappropriate emotional affair. When this secret is discovered, Meiko is suspended from school, and Namura is forced to resign from his teaching position and move away to Hiroshima. Devastated, Meiko begs him to take her with him, but he refuses, telling her to hate him and forget him.

Her development throughout the story sees her grappling with this lost love while trying to move forward with her life. She faces the persistent and unwelcome romantic attention from another student, Satoshi Miwa, who is a friend of Yuu Matsuura. Despite this, her heart remains loyal to Namura. She channels her emotions into her writing and ultimately achieves significant success by publishing a novel that wins a major literary award. This accomplishment provides the catalyst for her to confront her past; she and Miki travel to Hiroshima to see Namura again. At this pivotal meeting, Namura finally accepts his feelings for her and proposes marriage, an offer she accepts. While she is typically the more composed of the two friends, her journey reveals that she is capable of the same foolishness and emotional dependency as Miki when it comes to matters of the heart. Meiko's role in the larger narrative is significant as her secret struggles and ultimate resolution provide a parallel and poignant counterpoint to the main romantic drama between Miki and Yuu.
