Description
Bentham, widely known by his codename Bon Clay or Mr. 2, is a character who serves as both a formidable antagonist and a steadfast ally. His background is rooted in his role as a high-ranking Officer Agent of the criminal organization Baroque Works, where he holds the distinction of being the only male agent without a female partner, a reflection of his identity as an okama. His birthday is August 15th, and he hails from East Blue. Before the events in Alabasta, he was assigned the task of eliminating a fellow agent who had failed a mission, a duty that brought him into the path of the Straw Hat pirates.

Bon Clay is defined by an extravagantly flamboyant and energetic personality. He is genuinely friendly, easygoing, and speaks with expressive mannerisms, often punctuating his sentences with a feminine yet assertive tone. He is deeply committed to what he calls the okama way, a personal philosophy that places the bonds of friendship above all else as the most beautiful and sacred principle in the world. Despite his cheerful demeanor, he was entirely capable of performing the heinous acts required of a Baroque Works agent, showing that his loyalty to a cause directly fuels his actions, whether for evil or for good. He is theatrical, loves to dance and sing, and remains optimistic even in the direst circumstances, such as when he is imprisoned.

His motivations shift dramatically over the course of the story. Initially, he is driven by duty to his organization, carrying out Crocodile's orders to destabilize Alabasta by impersonating King Nefertari Cobra. However, after forming an unexpected bond with Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, his motivation transforms into an unwavering dedication to protect his new friends. He comes to believe that a life lived for the sake of friendship is the highest calling, and he acts on this belief without a moment’s hesitation, willing to sacrifice his freedom and even his life for them.

In the story of Alabasta, Bon Clay initially appears as a rival to the Straw Hats. He uses his Devil Fruit powers to impersonate the king, further escalating the civil war. He later confronts the crew directly in the city of Alubarna, where he engages in a fierce and prolonged battle with the chef Sanji. Both fighters specialize in powerful kicks, leading to an intense duel. Even when Bon Clay attempts to use a dirty trick by transforming into Nami to exploit Sanji’s weakness, he is ultimately defeated. After his loss, he accepts his fate with dignity, asking Sanji to finish him. Sanji instead compliments his strength and spares him, a gesture of respect that solidifies Bon Clay’s transformation from enemy to friend. Following Crocodile’s defeat, Bon Clay proves his newfound allegiance by hiding the Straw Hats’ ship from the Marines and then creating a distraction. He and his crew disguise themselves as the Straw Hats to lure the Marines away, allowing Luffy and his friends to escape Alabasta safely.

His key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Monkey D. Luffy is particularly strong, with Luffy affectionately calling him Bon-chan, a nickname that signifies deep respect and friendship. Bon Clay also forms a memorable rivalry-turned-friendship with Sanji, who respects his fighting ability. While he was once loyal to the Baroque Works leader Crocodile and his partner in crime Nico Robin, his friendship with the Straw Hats ultimately replaces those ties.

Bon Clay undergoes significant development, evolving from a loyal agent of a criminal empire into a heroic figure defined by self-sacrifice. His actions in Alabasta mark the beginning of this change, as he chooses to risk capture by the Marines to save his new friends. This arc of loyalty and sacrifice continues in later events, where his willingness to give everything for Luffy cements his legacy as one of the most loyal characters in the series.

His notable abilities stem from his consumption of the Mane Mane no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit also known as the Clone-Clone Fruit. This power allows him to transform into an exact physical duplicate of any person whose face he has touched with his right hand, perfectly copying their appearance, voice, and stature. He can return to his normal form by touching his face with his left hand. In combat, Bon Clay relies on a unique martial art called Okama Kenpo, a fighting style that blends powerful, acrobatic kicks with graceful ballet-inspired dance movements. This technique makes him highly agile and allows him to deliver devastating blows. He can also remove the two swan-shaped ornaments from his shoulders and wear them on his feet as steel-tipped weapons, increasing the range and power of his kicks to be as strong as rifle shots. He is noted for having physical endurance and agility that can match high-caliber fighters like Sanji, as well as the speed to keep up with a Super Spot-Billed Duck.
