Description
Lui Mao Xing is the central protagonist of the anime and manga series Cooking Master Boy, which is set in nineteenth‑century China during the Qing dynasty. He is the son of Pai, a legendary chef known as the Goddess of Cuisine or the Magician of Sichuan. Following his mother’s death, Mao defends her restaurant, the Chrysanthemum Tower, from a former disciple named Shao An. After winning a cooking duel, he is sent by Commander Lee to Guangzhou to hone his skills at the Yang Spring Restaurant, beginning a journey across China to become the finest chef he can be.
Mao is a thirteen‑year‑old prodigy with an extraordinary sense of taste and a vivid imagination. He can identify every ingredient in a dish simply by eating it and can recall any flavor he has experienced with perfect clarity. This ability, combined with his boundless creativity, allows him to invent original dishes that no one has imagined before. He is determined, kind‑hearted, and respectful toward his mother’s legacy, yet he also possesses a playful side and occasionally uses theatrical performances to achieve his goals. His driving motivation is to follow in his mother’s footsteps and become a legendary Super Chef, not for personal glory but to preserve and elevate the art of Chinese cuisine.
Throughout the story, Mao plays the role of the hero who challenges corrupt chefs, defends culinary traditions, and brings people together through food. He travels with a growing circle of companions, including his sister Liu Ke Lin (also known as Liu Jialing), the waitress Zhao Mei Li, the head chef Zhou Yu, and the low‑ranked cook Tang Sanjie. He also develops complex relationships with rivals such as Shao An, the cold yet skilled Lan Feihong (who later becomes an ally), and later the members of the Underground Cooking Society, a shadowy organization that seeks to monopolize cooking. Mao’s journey teaches him the importance of humility, teamwork, and the deeper meaning of cuisine beyond mere technique.
Mao’s development is marked by his growth from a talented but impulsive boy into a disciplined and wise chef. He earns the title of Super Chef at an unprecedentedly young age, alongside Lan Feihong, and later proves himself worthy of a legendary cooking utensil, the Eternal Spirit Knife. He collects other legendary utensils to counter the Underground Cooking Society and ultimately confronts their leader, Kai You. After Kai You’s defeat, Mao battles another rival to a draw and earns the right to become a palace chef, but he chooses instead to continue traveling across China with his friends, forever seeking new culinary knowledge.
Among his notable abilities are his refined senses, his talent for replicating and improving upon any dish, and his skill in wok cooking. He creates many memorable dishes during his journey, such as the Golden Fried Rice, the Mapo Tofu with soybeans that recreates his mother’s secret recipe, the Rising Dragon Dumplings, and the Catfish Seafood Noodles. He is also skilled at adapting to any situation, from cooking in a burning building to using local ingredients in remote villages. His signature utensil is a frying pan given to him by Tang Sanjie, and he later becomes the master of the Eternal Spirit Knife. Despite his youth, Mao embodies the spirit of a true chef: humble, curious, and endlessly passionate about food.
