Description
Nemu Kurotsuchi is the lieutenant of the 12th Division in the Gotei 13, serving under Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi. She is an artificially created being, the final successful result of Mayuri's Project Nemuri, which combined his research on artificial bodies and artificial souls. Originally designated Nemuri Number Seven, she was later simply called Nemu after proving to be a successful creation.

In terms of background, Nemu was formed from Mayuri's own blood and technology, making her a one-of-a-kind artificial lifeform within Soul Society. The six earlier iterations of the project all failed, with some unable to walk or talk and others dying at a young age. Nemu is the only artificial Soul Reaper of her kind and the sole known being of her nature in the Gotei 13.

Personality wise, Nemu is introverted, quiet, and melancholic. She speaks very little and tends to remain silent in her captain's presence. She has no personal ambitions or goals of her own, as her entire purpose revolves around serving Mayuri. She accepts her reality without complaint and shows a great deal of peace of mind in her clearly defined role. Despite the abuse and mistreatment she endures from Mayuri, including verbal berating and physical strikes, she remains utterly loyal and obedient. This loyalty stems from a sense of gratitude for being brought into existence. She does, however, display compassion and kindness toward others, most notably toward Uryu Ishida, whom she saved by giving him an antidote after his battle with Mayuri, thanking him for not killing her creator. This act shows that she possesses empathy beyond her programmed obedience.

Her motivations are straightforward: to carry out Mayuri's orders and to protect him when necessary. Even when she takes independent action in a fight to shield him, she is often punished for it, yet she continues to act out of devotion. Over time, Mayuri's treatment of her softens slightly, though their relationship remains fundamentally unequal.

In the story of Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion, Nemu appears as a supporting character, accompanying Mayuri as part of the 12th Division's involvement in the events surrounding the stolen Hyorinmaru. Her role in the movie is consistent with her usual function: she follows Mayuri's commands, assists in combat when needed, and provides quiet support in the background. She does not drive the plot but reinforces her established character as a loyal lieutenant and creation of Mayuri.

Key relationships define her character. The most significant is with Mayuri Kurotsuchi, her creator and captain. Their dynamic is one of creator and creation, with Mayuri viewing her as both a valuable scientific achievement and a useful tool. He rarely shows affection but has occasionally implied concern for her life as a point of pride in his own skill. Nemu's relationship with Uryu Ishida is another notable connection, as she shows him unexpected kindness and forms a bond of mutual respect. She is also distantly connected to the other Soul Reapers, who are aware of her artificial nature but generally accept her presence without comment.

Development for Nemu is limited in The DiamondDust Rebellion, as she remains in her usual supporting role with no major changes. More significant growth occurs in later arcs of the series, particularly during the Thousand-Year Blood War, where she gains greater agency and plays a critical role in battle, revealing hidden powers and a willingness to sacrifice herself.

Notable abilities stem from her artificial construction. Her body is designed to withstand fatal injuries, and though she still feels pain, Mayuri can repair her quickly after sustaining severe damage. She is immune to most of Mayuri's poisons and carries antidotes and other chemical compounds within her body, making her highly dangerous to anyone who attacks her internally. Her fighting style incorporates martial arts movements similar to capoeira combined with kidō attacks. She does not normally carry a zanpakutō, though one illustration in an artbook shows her wielding a thin katana, suggesting she possesses one but rarely uses it. She can also rotate her forearm at high speed to drill through hard materials and can fire a high-density spiritual bullet from her palm, though these specific abilities are more associated with later appearances in the series rather than The DiamondDust Rebellion.

In summary, within Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion, Nemu Kurotsuchi remains a quiet, dutiful lieutenant defined by her artificial origins, her unwavering loyalty to Mayuri, and her understated but present capacity for compassion. Her role in the film is that of a supportive background character whose presence reinforces her established traits without major change or focus.
