Description
Kaoru Kaido is a second-year student at Seigaku Junior High School and a regular on the school's tennis team. Standing at 173 centimeters with a weight of 57 kilograms and a B blood type, his birthday is May 11th. He is known for his long, lean build and his practice attire almost always includes a bandana wrapped around his head. Frequently, he can be heard exhaling with a distinct hissing sound, similar to a snake. In his daily life, Kaido enjoys marathon running and collecting bandanas, and his favorite foods include a dish of grated yam on soba, yogurt, and one hundred percent fruit juice.

Personality-wise, Kaido often comes across as intense, solitary, and easily angered, which has earned him the nickname Viper from his peers. He dislikes this nickname and reacts negatively when others use it, especially his rival Takeshi Momoshiro. Despite this fierce exterior, his character possesses a notably softer and more innocent side. He has a genuine fondness for small animals, and on one occasion he attempted to play with a teammate's cat, becoming visibly dejected when the cat rejected his advances. In another instance, he even jumped into a river to rescue a stray puppy. Another contradiction to his tough persona is a deep-seated fear of ghosts and supernatural subjects.

Kaido is driven by a powerful sense of determination and an unyielding will to succeed. His primary motivation is to improve his tennis skills through relentless hard work, and he is famously stoic in his pursuit of excellence. He is known to push himself through severe physical ordeals, accepting his own weaknesses as challenges to be overcome. His personal motto, which translates to water dripping on a stone, reflects his belief that persistent effort can overcome any obstacle. Within the Seigaku tennis club, his role is primarily as a singles player renowned for his incredible stamina and endurance. However, under the guidance of the data master Sadaharu Inui, he also grows into a capable doubles player, partnering with both Inui and his rival, Momoshiro. In the epilogue of the series, he eventually succeeds the captaincy of the team.

His most significant relationship is with his fellow second-year regular, Takeshi Momoshiro. The two share a constant, heated rivalry, always trying to outdo one another. While this creates frequent conflict, it is also a driving force for both players, and their deep understanding of each other makes them surprisingly effective as a doubles team. In contrast, his relationship with the older Sadaharu Inui is more of a mentorship. Inui recognizes Kaido's potential and provides him with rigorous, scientifically designed training menus, and Kaido respects Inui for this guidance. He also greatly respects the team captain, Kunimitsu Tezuka, who believes strongly in his potential and pushes him to unlock his full power.

Kaido experiences significant character development throughout the series, primarily growing from a solitary player into a more adaptable one. Initially focused solely on singles matches, he reluctantly learns to play doubles, realizing that it can also strengthen his singles game. This willingness to step outside his comfort zone marks a key part of his maturity as an athlete. His tennis abilities are formidable and centered on his signature shot, the Snake. This is a curving forehand shot that swings widely from side to side, designed to force opponents to run and drain their stamina. He later develops several powerful variations of this shot. The Boomerang Snake curves so sharply that it travels outside the court and around the net post before landing inside. The Short Snake is a net volley version of the technique. He also creates a Reverse Snake to counter specific opponents and the Tornado Snake, which spins so rapidly that it is significantly faster than a standard straight ball. In the anime, he even combines his shot with another player's technique to form the Hadokyuu Boomerang.
