TV-Series
Description
Kato Kachiro is a first-year student at Seishun Academy, commonly known as Seigaku, and is enrolled in class 1-5. He is recognizable by his neat, bob-style haircut and small stature, standing 148 centimeters tall initially, later growing to 150 centimeters. He is right-handed and has a birthday on March 2nd.
In terms of personality, Kachiro is generally polite, quiet, and gentle, which can sometimes make his nature seem meek or timid. Despite this reserved demeanor, he possesses a strong sense of justice and a stubborn, brave streak when defending his beliefs. He is a loyal friend who demonstrates a willingness to fight to the end for what he thinks is right, even when the odds are against him.
Kachiro's primary motivation is his dedication to the Seigaku tennis team and his friends within it. Although he is not one of the most skilled players on the team, his role is that of a devoted supporter who works in the background. He often assists his friend Ryoma Echizen by scouting opponents and gathering information, a task that can sometimes put him in harm's way. For example, during the monthly ranking tournament, he recorded a match for Ryoma and was hit in the eye by a ball. On another occasion, he was physically attacked by the aggressive player Jin Akutsu.
Within the story, Kachiro is a member of a trio of first-year friends, which includes Horio Satoshi and Mizuno Katsuo, often referred to as the Freshmen Trio. He has a notable relationship with his father, who works as a coach at a tennis club. In one episode, Kachiro feels helpless when a man named Sasabe verbally abuses his father, only to be relieved when Ryoma intervenes by defeating Sasabe in a match. Kachiro also shows significant character development in his confrontation with a second-year named Masashi Arai. When Arai claimed that injuries to the regular players gave him an unfair chance to join the team, Kachiro, despite being outclassed, challenged him to a match. Kachiro persisted and gradually began to return Arai's shots, fighting to the very end even though defeat would have meant leaving the tennis club. This act demonstrated Kachiro's courage and earned him a new respect for Arai, who had been playing with ankle weights. His abilities lie not in powerful shots or special techniques, but in his resilience, his eye for detail when observing matches, and his unwavering loyalty as a supportive teammate and friend.
