Description
Kachiro Kato is a first-year student at Seishun Academy, easily recognized by his neat, bob-style haircut and small, youthful appearance. He is almost always referred to by his nickname, Kachiro, and his birthday is March 2. He is a member of Class 1-5.

Kachiro has a quiet, gentle, and somewhat timid personality. Despite his normally polite and meek demeanor, he possesses a strong sense of justice and can be remarkably brave and stubborn when defending his beliefs. This inner resolve is most evident when he stands up against older, more intimidating students. His reserved nature, however, sometimes makes him vulnerable, and he has been a target for more aggressive individuals like the volatile player Jin Akutsu.

His background is connected to the sport through his father, who works as a coach at a tennis club. This connection leads to a notable incident where his father is mocked by an arrogant customer named Sasabe, leaving Kachiro feeling helpless until the situation is resolved by his friend, Ryoma Echizen.

Kachiro’s primary role in the story is that of a loyal supporter to the main protagonist, Ryoma Echizen. He often acts behind the scenes, actively scouting opponents and gathering information on upcoming matches to assist his friend. This supportive function is not without risk; he was once caught and attacked by a player he was observing. He is also a dedicated member of the Seishun Academy tennis club, though not a regular player, and is frequently seen cheering for the team alongside his friends.

His most important relationships are with his fellow first-year students, Satoshi Horio and Katsuo Mizuno, with whom he forms a supportive trio often called the Freshman Trio. He is also loyal to Ryoma Echizen, helping him whenever possible, and shares a class with an older student, Masashi Arai. A key moment in Kachiro’s personal development occurs when he courageously challenges Arai, a second-year who arrogantly claims that injuries to the regulars have opened up a spot for him. Despite being completely outclassed, Kachiro persists and gradually begins to return Arai’s shots, refusing to give up even though he was playing for his place in the club. The match is stopped by the team captain, Kunimitsu Tezuka, and Kachiro gains a new respect for Arai upon learning he was playing with ankle weights. This event demonstrates his growth from a timid observer to someone who will fight for his beliefs and the honor of his team.

In terms of tennis abilities, Kachiro is right-handed. As a first-year, his own playing skills are not highly developed, and he is not a regular on the team. His main contribution is not his personal skill, but his dedication and willingness to perform reconnaissance and serve as an unglamorous but vital supporter for his more talented teammates.
