TV-Series
Description
Kazuki Juumonji is a first-year student at Deimon High School and a key member of the Deimon Devil Bats American football team, wearing jersey number 51. He is physically well-suited for his position as a lineman and offensive tackle, standing 175 cm tall and weighing 71 kg, with a 40-yard dash time of 5.5 seconds and a bench press maximum of 85 kg after rigorous training. His most distinctive physical feature is an X-shaped scar on his right cheek.
Before joining the football team, Juumonji was a delinquent who, along with his two close friends Koji Kuroki and Shozo Togano, bullied Sena Kobayakawa, forcing him to run errands. The trio, known as the Ha-Ha Brothers, were reluctantly blackmailed by the team's quarterback Yoichi Hiruma into joining the Devil Bats after a failed attempt at revenge. Despite this initial hostility toward the sport, Juumonji undergoes significant personal growth, becoming one of the first characters to independently discover that Sena is the team's legendary running back Eyeshield 21. He is notably the first of the three friends to become genuinely serious about football, vowing to improve as a lineman to support Sena.
Personality-wise, Juumonji acts as the unofficial leader of the Ha-Ha Brothers and is considered the eldest brother figure among them. While he can be brash and easily provoked, he is notably calmer and more level-headed than Kuroki and Togano. He possesses a thoughtful and perceptive side, demonstrated by his ability to deduce Sena's secret identity and his understanding of others' emotions. Musashi has commented that Juumonji shares his stoic, samurai-like attitude. Despite being a former bully, Juumonji has a strong sense of loyalty and cannot tolerate anyone, including his own father, insulting or looking down on his friends. He is also quite intelligent, ranking among the smartest members of the Devil Bats, surpassed only by Hiruma, Mamori Anezaki, and Manabu Yukimitsu.
Juumonji's central motivation stems from his desire to prove his worth and shed the label of trash that others, particularly his father, have placed on him and his friends. He is driven by a refusal to continue losing and a determination to change his reputation through hard work and dedication to football. This drive is further fueled by witnessing the deep friendship and shared dream of Hiruma, Kurita, and Musashi, which mirrors the bond he shares with his own two friends. His character arc is one of rehabilitation, as he quits smoking to focus on his athletic performance and transforms from a reluctant participant into a committed athlete who takes pride in his contributions.
Within the story's narrative, Juumonji and his friends represent the growth of the Deimon Devil Bats from a ragtag group into a disciplined and formidable team. He plays a crucial role as a reliable lineman, often creating openings for Sena's runs. He is also one of the few defensive players to score touchdowns, achieving this rare feat on two notable occasions: once by recovering a fumble against the Shinryuji Naga and dragging Agon Kongo into the end zone, and again by catching a fumbled ball against the Hakushuu Dinosaurs. During the match against the Ojo White Knights, he even took on the role of fullback to assist Sena. In the final play against Hakushuu, he displayed his versatility and selflessness by taking the position of center to allow Kurita to use his full strength. The narrative implies he is the most likely candidate to become team captain after the founding members graduate. In the epilogue, he goes on to play for Saikyoudai, the strongest university team, alongside other elite former high school players.
Juumonji develops several notable techniques and abilities over the course of the series. He masters the Delinquent Death Blow, a technique learned from the Zokugaku Chameleons that involves grabbing an opponent's sleeve and using their own momentum to slam them to the ground. Alongside Kuroki and Togano, he executes the Ha Ha Triple Attack, a coordinated three-on-one tackle that utilizes each member's specific strengths. Through the grueling Death March training, he and his friends learn the Hip Explosion technique, a proper method of using their entire bodies to deliver more force against opposing linemen, as well as the Sweeper, a formation where linemen form a protective barrier to clear a path for the runner. In the anime adaptation only, he is given the additional character trait of acrophobia, a fear of heights that even the Death March cannot cure.
