Description
Yoichi Hiruma is the cunning and ruthless captain, quarterback, and de facto coach of the Deimon Devil Bats American football team. He is a second-year student at Deimon High School and the primary architect behind the team's formation and its relentless pursuit of the Christmas Bowl championship.
Hiruma's past reveals the origins of his obsession with the sport. At the age of ten, he snuck into an American military base and discovered American football, quickly learning the rules and using his understanding of the game to gamble successfully on the soldiers' matches. He entered Mao Junior High, where he met Ryokan Kurita, a fellow fan who inspired him to create his own team. To establish the club, Hiruma built an extensive information network to gather blackmail material, even acquiring the help of the volatile Agon Kongo as an enforcer. He, Kurita, and Gen "Musashi" Takekura made a pact to reach the Christmas Bowl. Their initial plan to join the powerhouse Shinryuji Naga failed when Kurita was rejected, leading Hiruma and Musashi to abandon the school out of loyalty. The three instead enrolled at Deimon and founded the Devil Bats. Their first year was disastrous, including a 99-0 loss to the Ojo White Knights, and Musashi was forced to leave the team to support his family, leaving Hiruma to carry on with a worsening sense of determination.
Personality defines Hiruma above all else. He is deliberately demonic in appearance, with spiky blond hair, sharp fangs, and multiple ear piercings, a look designed to intimidate. He operates on a win-at-all-costs philosophy, showing little regard for conventional sportsmanship or ethics. He carries a "book of threats" filled with compromising information on nearly everyone he meets, from students to school officials, and wields an extensive personal arsenal of firearms, including automatic rifles, flamethrowers, and bazookas, to coerce and control those around him. He has effectively seized control of Deimon High School, using his power to divert funds to his club and give himself perfect grades. Despite this, he strictly adheres to the rules of American football during play. He often expresses excitement or frustration by firing his guns into the air and refers to his teammates with vulgar nicknames, such as "Shorty" for Sena Kobayakawa. Beneath this terrifying exterior, however, lies a deeply strategic and surprisingly loyal individual. He abandoned his own chance for glory to follow Kurita to Deimon, and he preserved Musashi's kicking tee as a sacred object after he left, refusing to let anyone else fill the role of kicker. Over time, characters like Sena and team manager Mamori Anezaki learn to read his true emotions, seeing past his act to notice when he is worried, happy, or in pain.
Hiruma's primary motivation is a singular, burning desire to win the Christmas Bowl, the high school football championship. This goal, promised in a pact with his two original teammates, drives every action he takes. At the start of the series, with his and Kurita's final year of eligibility approaching, he witnesses Sena Kobayakawa's incredible running speed and forces him to join the team as the hidden ace runner, Eyeshield 21. As the team's captain and quarterback, his role extends far beyond playing. He is the mastermind who arranges all practices, devises every offensive and defensive strategy, and uses blackmail, cyber-terrorism, and psychological warfare to schedule exhibition games and recruit new members. He is, in essence, the team's "control tower".
His key relationships are central to the story. His bond with Ryokan Kurita is one of unwavering loyalty, forming the heart of the team's foundation. Musashi's absence is a constant sore point, and his eventual return mid-game is a pivotal emotional moment. His relationship with Mamori Anezaki is complex; while they constantly bicker and she often physically blocks his gunfire, they share a deep, unspoken understanding of each other. With Sena, Hiruma plays the role of a demanding and often terrifying mentor, pushing him to become a star while hiding his identity from rivals. He also develops a strong, respectful rivalry with Shien "Kid" Mushanokoji, the quarterback of the Seibu Wild Gunmen, both acknowledging the other's superior skill.
While Hiruma does not undergo a dramatic physical transformation, his character develops significantly over the course of the series. At the start, he treats his teammates almost purely as tools for victory. As the Devil Bats grow and begin to believe in themselves, Hiruma gradually places more faith in their abilities, moving away from his purely objective, statistical outlook. He learns to trust in the intangible bonds of the team, culminating in critical plays that rely on mutual understanding rather than calculated strategy. He demonstrates incredible willpower, such as recovering from a broken arm in a matter of weeks to play in the Christmas Bowl.
Hiruma's notable abilities lie almost entirely in his intellect and psychological manipulation. He is possessed of a steel-trap, strategic mind, capable of devising complex and unpredictable trick plays on the fly. His ability to read opponents, manipulate their emotions, and exploit their weaknesses is as potent a weapon as his physical arsenal. While his physical stats are unremarkable, evidenced by a 5.1-second 40-yard dash, he compensates with sheer cunning and an unyielding refusal to accept defeat. His most powerful asset is his ability to instill fear and confidence simultaneously, driving his own team to exceed their limits while unnerving the opposition at every turn.
