Description
Musashi, whose real name is Gen Takekura, is a second-year student at Deimon High School and serves as the place kicker and occasional linebacker for the Deimon Devil Bats. He is one of the three original founders of the team, having established it alongside Yoichi Hiruma and Ryokan Kurita during middle school under the name Mao Devil Bats. His nickname, Musashi, is derived from the kanji in his surname, Takekura, which can be read as Musashi, and is a reference to the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi.
Musashi is introduced as a young man who appears much older than his seventeen years, initially sporting a buzz cut and stubble. This mature appearance reflects the serious responsibilities he has taken on. After his father collapsed due to illness during his freshman year, Musashi dropped out of school to take over the family’s construction company. This forced him to leave the football team, despite his deep desire to continue playing. He refuses to rejoin the Devil Bats for a long time, believing his duty to his family takes priority. However, after Sena Kobayakawa and Taro Raimon (Monta) persistently seek him out and prove the team’s growing strength, Musashi agrees to return—but only if the team becomes strong enough to compete at the highest level. In the manga, his comeback occurs during the game against Seibu, after his father strikes him for abandoning his teammates; in the anime, he rejoins during the match against the Bando Spiders.
Personality-wise, Musashi is calm, dependable, and deeply principled. He carries a strong sense of duty and loyalty, both to his family and to his friends. He is humble and honest, often correcting the exaggerated reputation Hiruma created for him—the so-called "60-yard Magnum" kicker, which was actually a lie fabricated by Hiruma to intimidate opponents. Musashi repeatedly insists that the legend is false. He is not one for flashy behavior and often serves as a grounding presence alongside the more outlandish Hiruma and the gentle giant Kurita.
His primary motivation is to honor the promise he made with Hiruma and Kurita during their middle school days: to reach the Christmas Bowl, the top high school American football championship in Japan. This goal drives him to return to the team and give his all, even after months away from the sport. Musashi also draws motivation from his rivalry with Kotaro Sasaki, the kicker for the Bando Spiders, a counterpart whose own skills and history mirror the classic samurai rivalry between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro.
Key relationships define his role in the story. With Hiruma, he shares a deep bond of mutual respect and friendship; they founded the team together and understand each other without many words. With Kurita, he shares a warm, brotherly connection that dates back to their first encounter at an American military base. Musashi also develops a mentor-like relationship with Sena and Monta, whose determination inspires him to return to football. His defined rivalry with Kotaro Sasaki serves as a major subplot, pushing Musashi to sharpen his kicking skills.
Throughout the series, Musashi undergoes significant development. He begins as a brilliant but absent player, weighed down by family obligations. After his return, he gradually regains his form and confidence, eventually surpassing his earlier limits. He learns to balance his responsibilities as a construction foreman with his commitment to the team, and his presence solidifies the Devil Bats' special teams.
Notable abilities include his immensely strong right leg, which allows him to deliver powerful kickoffs that pin opponents deep in their own territory or force touchbacks. He is also skilled at executing onside kicks—kicking the ball at a sharp angle and shorter distance so his teammates can recover it. Despite the fabricated "60-yard Magnum" nickname, Musashi’s real kicking range is formidable, and he consistently delivers under pressure. As a linebacker, he uses his physical strength and determination to contribute on defense. His physical stats include a height of 177 cm, weight of 77 kg, a 40-yard dash time of 5.6 seconds, and a bench press of 90 kg.
