Description
Maki Tokitou is a supporting character in the anime Karin. She is the best friend of the protagonist, Karin Maaka, and has been close to her since their childhood, with some accounts placing the start of their friendship in kindergarten and others in middle school after Maki saved Karin from a ditch. Maki is a cheerful and energetic girl with short green hair that she often wears in a ponytail and green eyes. Her personality is spunky and tomboyish, and she tends to become overly excited about Karin’s romantic life, frequently teasing her about her relationship with Kenta Usui. Due to her fondness for shojo manga and similar material, she sometimes jumps to dirty-minded conclusions about the couple’s intimacy, even though Karin and Kenta are actually waiting until marriage.

Maki’s primary motivation is to be a supportive friend, though she also yearns for a romantic relationship of her own. She initially shows no interest in the new transfer student Winner Sinclair, unlike most of the other girls at school, but she gradually develops a crush on him because of his protective nature. She attempts to confess her feelings by handcrafting a scarf with the letter “W” on it, but Winner gently rejects her because he is in love with Karin. In episode 23, Maki directly expresses her love to Winner and steals a kiss from him. It is also in this episode that she finally learns Karin is a vampire, a secret Winner reveals to her.

Throughout the story, Maki serves as a grounding, normal presence in Karin’s life, constantly roping her into various favors and helping her manage the stresses of her everyday existence. She has no supernatural abilities; she is a perfectly ordinary high school student whose main contributions are her unwavering loyalty, her humor, and her role as a confidante. Her development mainly involves learning to accept her unrequited feelings for Winner and coming to terms with the revelation of her best friend’s true nature.
