Description
Gerd Frentzen is a central figure introduced at the beginning of the story as a celebrated and undefeated motorcycle racing champion. His life takes a drastic turn following a severe accident on the track, caused by a demoniac, a biomechanical creature. The incident leaves him paralyzed from the waist down, abruptly ending his illustrious career. This physical trauma is compounded by profound social isolation, as he is subsequently abandoned by his racing team, his sponsors, and his girlfriend.
In his moment of deepest despair, Gerd is approached by a mysterious figure who offers him an experimental drug. Desperate to regain his former life, he accepts, and the substance miraculously restores his ability to walk. However, this cure comes at a terrible price, as it transforms him into a demoniac himself, granting him superhuman power but also placing his humanity in jeopardy. Initially, Gerd uses his newfound abilities to hunt and destroy other demoniacs who prey on humans. These actions, caught on camera, lead the public to hail him as a messianic hero and a savior.
Despite this brief period of adulation, Gerd's fragile peace shatters when he discovers that his former manager and his ex-girlfriend, Jill Hoffman, had been conspiring behind his back and exploiting his fame. Overcome with rage and the corrupting influence of his powers, he attacks them. Jill then publicly brands him as a monster, and the media turns against him, leading to his status as a reviled outcast. In the wake of this betrayal, his sanity begins to erode rapidly, causing him to suffer from intense hallucinations in which he perceives all other humans as demoniacs, leading him to lash out violently and indiscriminately.
Throughout this tragic downfall, his friend Hermann Saltza remains a steadfast and loyal supporter, representing one of the few positive human connections Gerd has left. Another key relationship is with the protagonist, Joseph. After a confrontation, Gerd briefly regains his sanity and, aware that he is losing control, makes a desperate plea to Joseph to end his life should he ever succumb to his madness again. This request is eventually fulfilled when Gerd loses control once more, and Joseph strikes him down in front of Hermann.
As a demoniac, Gerd is a formidable melee combatant. His armored form is predominantly white, complemented by a purplish-red helmet. He wields a pair of energy-bladed boomerangs attached to his back and can also project sharp energy blades from his feet, knees, and elbows, making him a lethal and agile fighter in close quarters. His journey is a harrowing arc from a celebrated hero to a tragic, tormented figure who, in his final act of will, seeks death as an escape from the curse of his own power.
