Description
Joseph is the central protagonist of Blassreiter, a mysterious and solitary figure who operates as a hunter of Demoniacs, the transformed beings that threaten humanity. His nationality is German, and he is known by the codename Blue due to the color of his transformed body.

Joseph's background is rooted in tragedy and social hardship. He was born an Outsider, a social class considered inferior and subjected to severe persecution. His parents died from exposure while trying to bring the infant Joseph to a church, and he was subsequently raised by a caring priest. He spent his childhood in a close-knit church community, helping care for other orphans and learning to whittle statues of the Virgin Mary from the priest. When a flood devastated the area, the church became a shelter for the homeless and sick, and the strain led to the priest’s death from exhaustion. In his moment of despair at fifteen years old, Joseph met Magwald Xargin, a researcher who arrived with supplies and seemed to share his desire to help the poor. Through Xargin, Joseph was reunited with his long-lost older sister, Alexandra Sasha Jobson, a brilliant scientist researching nanotechnology. Their hope was shattered when Sasha was murdered by citizens who hated Outsiders. Overcome with grief, Xargin turned against their benefactor, Victor Statchus, and when Joseph tried to stop him, he was mortally wounded. Xargin then infected Joseph with nanomachine-infused blood, transforming him into an Amalgam. After this event, Victor gave Joseph the GARM motorcycle and tasked him with tracking down the now-renegade Xargin.

Joseph's personality is defined by a quiet, compassionate nature and an extraordinary will. Despite the immense suffering he has endured, he retains a deep care for humanity. He is often seen whittling, a meditative activity that reflects his contemplative and isolated existence. His most defining trait is his exceptional sense of self-control. While this discipline allows him to retain his sanity and humanity in his transformed state, it also limits his raw power compared to other Demoniacs who fully embrace their rage. He is not a loner out of misanthropy but because his life as a hunter leaves little room for close bonds.

Joseph's primary motivation is to stop Magwald Xargin, his former friend who has embraced a genocidal mission to purge the world of humanity. He also seeks to protect innocent people from the Amalgam plague. An early tragedy resulting from his mission is his confrontation with motorcycle star Gerd Frentzen, which leaves the racer paralyzed and makes Joseph a primary target for the Xenogenesis Assault Team (XAT).

Throughout the story, Joseph forms several key relationships. He befriends Malek Werner, a young boy who shares his experiences of bullying and social isolation as an Outsider. This leads to a connection with Malek's older stepsister, Amanda Werner, an XAT operative who comes to understand Joseph’s tragic nature. He has a complex bond with his sister Sasha, who is later revived with cybernetic enhancements and continues to believe in him. He communicates with Elea, the artificial intelligence installed in his GARM motorcycle, who appears as a holographic girl. The most significant and tragic relationship is with Xargin, a man Joseph once admired as a brother figure before he became the ultimate enemy.

Joseph undergoes significant development and transformation. For much of the series, his self-control is both his strength and his weakness. Desperate to become stronger to face Xargin, he agrees to undergo the Pale Horse physical enhancement program. This experiment is successful but transforms him into a berserker-like Blassreiter with red markings instead of blue ones. In this berserker state, he is haunted by illusions and loses the ability to distinguish friend from foe, even turning on Sasha and Amanda. This represents the loss of the very self-control he prized. Ultimately, Joseph confronts Xargin in a final battle where he is assisted by the spirits of fallen allies like Gerd Frentzen. He dies alongside Xargin at the conclusion of the main conflict, but his spirit appears to Amanda years later after XAT is reestablished.

Joseph possesses several notable abilities. As an Amalgam, he can fuse with and control any metallic machine he touches, using this ability to enhance his GARM motorcycle. His primary weapon is an energy blade that can transform into a long, whip-like form for both offensive strikes and defensive maneuvers against projectiles. He also has the power of high-speed movement, allowing him to seemingly disappear and reappear at will. His most distinctive ability is his extraordinary willpower, which lets him maintain his sanity and humanity in his transformed state, setting him apart from most other Demoniacs.
