Description
Oz Vessalius is the main protagonist of Pandora Hearts. He is introduced as the fifteen-year-old heir to the Vessalius Dukedom, one of the four great noble houses, and is described as a boy with blond hair and green eyes. He was largely raised by his uncle Oscar alongside his younger sister Ada, while his father, the reigning duke, remained cold, distant, and unwilling to touch him. During his coming-of-age ceremony, members of the Baskerville clan appear and condemn him for the sin of existing, casting him into the Abyss, an otherworldly prison dimension inhabited by beings known as Chains. Inside the Abyss he meets the Chain Alice, forms an illegal contract with her by consuming her blood, and escapes back to the human world, only to discover that ten years have passed. Seeking to understand what his supposed sin meant, he joins the organization Pandora and becomes involved in investigating the mysteries surrounding Alice, the Abyss, and his own past.
In personality, Oz is outwardly bright, optimistic, energetic, and playful, and he often flirts with young women he finds charming. Beneath this cheerful surface, however, he carries a deep sense of loneliness and low self-worth shaped by his father's rejection. As a child he worked hard to earn his father's recognition, only to learn that his father hated him deeply. This experience led Oz to conclude that nothing in the world is guaranteed, to regard himself as weak, and to adopt an obedient, self-sacrificing attitude, willing to accept harm himself rather than let others suffer. He treats people without concern for status and tries to protect those close to him, even when doing so puts him in danger.
Oz's central motivation is to discover the truth behind his condemnation and the meaning of his existence. Initially this takes the form of wanting to know why he was thrown into the Abyss and helping Alice recover her lost memories. As the story unfolds and the truth about his origins is revealed, his goal shifts to preventing others from rewriting history and to protecting the world he knows, even at the cost of his own life and existence.
Throughout the story, Oz is the figure around which the central conflicts revolve. His fall into the Abyss sets the main events in motion, and his connection to Alice makes him a key player in the struggle between Pandora, the Baskervilles, and the Abyss. Later he becomes the medium of Jack Vessalius, the legendary hero credited with ending the Tragedy of Sablier, and is publicly hailed as a hero when Jack speaks through him. The deeper revelations of the story show that Oz's body is not his own but the de-aged body of Jack Vessalius, and that his true nature is tied to the powerful Chain known as B-Rabbit. In reality, Oz was originally one of two black rabbit dolls given life by a woman named Lacie, and his consciousness was later bound up in the events that led to the Tragedy of Sablier, including being forced to sever the Chains of the World, an act that caused the city of Sablier to be swallowed by the Abyss. In the final confrontation, Oz accepts his true identity, travels back in time with Alice, and persuades the Core of the Abyss to sever its bond with the world, an act that saves the world but causes Oz and Alice to fade away. In the aftermath, Gilbert vows to await their reincarnation, and a century later they are reunited with him.
