Description
Jack Vessalius is a central figure from the story, known historically as the hero who ended the Tragedy of Sablier a century before the main events. He was the third son of the Vessalius family, then a minor noble house. Born to a concubine and abandoned by his father along with his mother, he spent his early childhood in poverty, often衣衫褴褛 on the streets. His life changed at age fifteen when he met a girl named Lacie Baskerville, who gave him a reason to live and made him promise to find her again. This meeting became the defining moment of his existence.

On the surface, Jack is portrayed as a cheerful, easygoing, and charming person who enjoys socializing, particularly with women. He is a self-proclaimed music box craftsman with genuine talents for singing, dancing, and playing the piano. He also has a habit of climbing trees to be alone and dislikes strict aristocratic conventions. However, this outgoing personality masks a deeply complex and disturbed inner world. He is often described as being like "still water" – a clear, quiet surface that reflects only the viewer, making his true nature impossible to discern. While he appears friendly, there is a sense of detachment and a fundamental inability to connect with others on a genuine emotional level. Lacie herself recognized this, stating that he did not love her and that his eyes reflected nothing.

Jack's primary motivation is rooted in his encounter with Lacie. Before meeting her, he felt his life was empty. She gave him a reason to live, and after she was cast into the Abyss, he became obsessively fixated on reuniting with her. His goal became to throw the entire world into the Abyss as a gift for her. This desire is born not from malice, but from a twisted, desperate need to feel alive. He came to realize that he both loved and hated Lacie for giving him hope, but the emotion she stirred in him was the only thing that felt truly real. He needed her to define his own existence.

Jack is the secret instigator of the Tragedy of Sablier, an event that destroyed a city and reshaped the world. To achieve his goal of sending the world into the Abyss, he manipulated the Chain known as B-Rabbit (Oz) and used the Will of the Abyss (White Alice). He also murdered his best friend, Oswald Baskerville, who was the Glen at the time, by beheading him. After the tragedy, history was rewritten to call him a hero, a title he despised because he knew the truth of his betrayal. In the present, Jack exists as a fragment of his soul residing within the body of Oz Vessalius, a boy who looks exactly like him. This is because Jack's original body was rejected by the Abyss and forced into a cycle of rebirth every twenty-five years. He orchestrated events so that Oz, who is actually the Chain B-Rabbit (created from a stuffed rabbit belonging to Alice), would grow up in the Vessalius household, effectively creating a vessel for his own will. He acts as a guide to Oz, but his ultimate plan is to use Oz's body to finally complete his century-old scheme.

Jack's most significant relationship is with Lacie Baskerville, the woman he worships and whose loss drives every action. He was also close friends with her brother, Oswald Baskerville, the Glen. Despite his friendship, he killed Oswald without hesitation to further his plans. He interacted with the Will of the Abyss (White Alice), who had feelings for him, but he primarily used her to gain power. He is the original master of the Chain B-Rabbit, which is linked to the soul of Oz. His connection to Oz is the most important in the present timeline, as he uses him as a vessel and a pawn. He also had a history of short-lived romantic relationships with women who all met untimely ends.

Over the course of the story, Jack's image shifts from a benevolent, heroic mentor to the story's primary antagonist. His cheerful facade is revealed to be a mask for a profoundly selfish and nihilistic nature. He never sought to understand others; he only needed them to serve his purpose of reaching Lacie. In the end, Jack achieves his goal by forcing the world into the Abyss, but he loses everything in the process. After being confronted with the consequences of his actions and the truth of his own emptiness, his soul is destroyed, fading away in the core of the Abyss with the realization that he had never truly learned or felt anything genuine for himself.

Jack is noted for several abilities. He is the contractor of the powerful Chain, B-Rabbit (the "Crimson Rabbit" or "Blood-Stained Black Rabbit"). He possesses the skill to use a pocket watch to control the power of this Chain and can temporarily take control of Oz Vessalius's body. He is also highly skilled in creating music boxes and is a capable social manipulator, able to charm and deceive those around him to achieve his ends.
