Description
Byakko no Kogenta is a Shikigami, a type of ritual spirit in Japanese mythology that forms contracts with practitioners of onmyodo known as Toujinshi. He belongs to the Byakko family, named after the White Tiger, one of the four great guardian gods of Japan, which also includes Seiryuu the Azure Dragon, Suzaku the Vermilion Bird, and Genbu the Black Tortoise. In the anime storyline, his contracted partner is a boy named Riku Tachibana, who summons him for the first time to save his grandfather from an attacker. The world they inhabit is one where 24 families of Shikigami exist, with three members per family, representing each solar term of the year.
Kogenta has a very distinct and vibrant personality that defines his interactions throughout the series. He is typically portrayed as cocky, arrogant, and pretentious, often referring to himself in a grandiose manner. He has a hyperactive nature and is quick to anger, reacting with exaggerated feline gestures such as bristling fur or making hissing sounds when provoked. One of his most notable quirks is his intense dislike of being compared to or called a cat, always insisting that he is a White Tiger. Despite his rough exterior and boastful claims, his core nature aligns with the Byakko family traits of trust and loyalty, which become more evident as his bond with Riku deepens.
Kogenta's primary motivation throughout the story is tied directly to his role as a Shikigami. At first, he is incredulous that he has been partnered with someone as seemingly dimwitted as Riku, but he eventually comes to accept this and even tries to help improve Riku's character. His role is that of Riku's guardian and partner in battle, fighting against the threat of the Chi-ryuu, a powerful financial group involved in onmyodo that seeks to open the four Taiten and free a boy named Utsuho. He is Riku's best friend, and their relationship evolves from a reluctant contract into a deep, mutual trust.
One of the most significant and tragic aspects of Kogenta's backstory involves his relationship with Riku. It is eventually revealed that Kogenta, while in an uncontrolled berserker state known as Daikoujin, was responsible for the death of Riku's parents at the time their contract was first formed. Kogenta himself had no memory of this event, as his Daikoujin form causes him to lose consciousness and forget the battle afterward. When this truth comes to light, Riku is initially devastated, but he ultimately forgives Kogenta, choosing to move past the tragedy and maintain their partnership.
Throughout the series, Kogenta undergoes significant development, particularly in his abilities and his relationship with Riku. Early on, he becomes the first Shikigami to achieve the Daikoujin form, a giant and immensely powerful transformation where the Shikigami usually goes berserk. He personally dislikes using this form, considering it an unfair advantage because he has no memory of the fight after it ends. Later in the series, he and Riku obtain the Master Drive, which allows Kogenta to achieve an even more powerful transformation called Choukoujin, or Super Descended God, where he retains his sanity while gaining a new appearance. In the series finale, Kogenta willingly allows Riku to terminate their contract, showing his selflessness and growth. However, in a testament to their enduring bond, the contract lingers, and Kogenta's spirit is seen watching over the shrine.
In combat, Kogenta wields a sword named Saikaido Kotetsu. He also possesses an innate skill with wind magic, with many of his special attacks involving wind-based techniques. As a Shikigami, his special abilities, known as hissatsu waza, are activated when his Toujinshi, Riku, performs specific sequences of hand seals called In. One distinctive feature of his appearance is a cat bell attached to his tail, and he admits that the sound of such a bell used to make him purr, which may explain why he wears one.
