Description
Fallow is a character from the Deltora Quest series who serves as a primary antagonist. He is a Grade 3 Ol, a type of shapeshifting creature in the service of the evil Shadow Lord. The Shadow Lord placed Fallow in the city of Del, the capital of Deltora, where he ruled for approximately sixteen years during the Shadow Lord's occupation. He physically resembles Prandine, his predecessor as the chief advisor, appearing as a tall, thin man with a bird-like countenance, long robes, and bony fingers. The Shadow Lord specifically preferred that Fallow maintain this form.
In terms of personality, Fallow is cruel and openly malicious. Unlike the more subtle Prandine, the Shadow Lord no longer needed a manipulator, so Fallow’s reign was marked by overt oppression. He is willing to torture and imprison innocent people, particularly the friends and families of those suspected of plotting against the Shadow Lord. For instance, he had Lief's parents, Endon and Sharn, imprisoned years before the main events of the story. A significant and debilitating flaw is his addiction to a sickly green substance known as Lumin, which the Shadow Lord provides him. This addiction dulls his mind and causes him to frequently neglect his duties, making him less competent and focused than his predecessor.
Fallow's primary motivation is to serve the Shadow Lord and maintain his own position of power in Del. He directly commands the Grey Guards, the Shadow Lord's foot soldiers, and receives orders directly from his master. He is deeply concerned with capturing the companions Lief, Barda, and Jasmine, who are retrieving the seven lost gems of the Belt of Deltora. He interrogates Endon, attempting to extract information about the gems and the whereabouts of Lief. However, his addiction-addled mind makes him less observant than he could be, as he fails to see through simple lies told by his prisoners.
Fallow’s key relationships are with his master and his prisoners. He lives in fear of the Shadow Lord, who frequently berates him for his failures and threatens him. He holds Lief's parents as hostages, intending to use them against the young hero, but is explicitly ordered by the Shadow Lord not to kill them for this strategic purpose.
Fallow's role in the story reaches its climax during the final confrontation in Del. He prepares to execute several members of the Resistance, including Lief's parents and his companions. When Lief attempts a rescue, Endon and Sharn attack Fallow, wrapping their chains around his neck. Although Fallow stabs Endon, a mortal wound, the three of them fall from the execution platform. Fallow frees himself, but in his struggle, he knocks over a cone that provides light for the platform. He is drenched in the searing hot liquid inside and dies in agony.
In the anime adaptation of Deltora Quest, Fallow has a somewhat expanded role, appearing more frequently to report the companions' progress to the Shadow Lord. He is involved in sending other agents, like the sorcerer Oacus, after the group. In the anime, he fights Barda and Lief directly, and during a final aerial battle with Lief, he uses his shapeshifting abilities to grow wings. He ultimately meets his end when he grabs the Belt of Deltora, which destroys him on contact.
Fallow’s notable ability, common to his species, is shapeshifting. As a Grade 3 Ol, he can take any form he desires and hold it indefinitely. He also possesses a dagger for personal protection. However, his mental faculties are implied to have been damaged by his addiction to Lumin, which is a key factor in his ultimate failure.
