TV-Series
Description
King Endon is a central figure in the events leading up to the Shadow Lord's invasion of Deltora, serving as the last true king before the land fell under evil's shadow and the father of the series' protagonist, Lief. He is a character shaped by a strict upbringing, burdened by regret, and ultimately defined by his quiet courage and desire for redemption.
Endon was raised within the secluded safety of the palace walls, the only son and heir of King Alton. From birth, he was indoctrinated with the Rule, a comprehensive set of laws created by the Chief Advisors that governed every aspect of life and leadership. This upbringing made him a dutiful and obedient individual who was afraid to stray from established authority, showing little ambition to learn about his kingdom or people beyond what he was told by the Chief Advisor. As a child, he was given a servant boy named Jarred as a companion, and the two became like brothers despite their very different personalities. While Jarred was bold and questioned the Rule, Endon was cautious and compliant, often begging his friend not to break the rules for fear of punishment.
Endon was crowned king at an extremely young age following the death of his parents. In accordance with tradition, the magical Belt of Deltora was fastened around his waist on his Coronation Day, marking him as the true ruler, but was then immediately removed and sealed in a tower, following the dictates of the Rule. This act left the kingdom vulnerable. On the seventh anniversary of his reign, his old nursemaid, Min, warned him of a great evil that was to occur that night. Endon dismissed her concerns and went to a feast, only to learn later that she had fallen to her death, leading him to realize she had been murdered.
Realizing the danger, Endon finally activated a signal left by Jarred seven years prior, a golden arrow to be shot into a hollow tree. When Jarred arrived, Endon fell to his knees and begged for forgiveness for doubting him all those years ago. Together with Endon's wife, Sharn, they went to retrieve the Belt, only to find the guards dead and the seven gems being carried away by the Shadow Lord's creatures, the Ak-Baba. The Chief Advisor, Prandine, revealed himself as a servant of the Shadow Lord, responsible for the deaths of Endon's parents, before being tricked and pushed to his death by Sharn. With the Belt shattered and the kingdom lost, Endon, Sharn, Jarred, and Jarred's wife Anna devised a plan. Endon and a pregnant Sharn would stay in Del and assume the identities of Jarred and Anna, becoming the local blacksmith and his wife, while Jarred and Anna fled disguised as the King and Queen to draw the Shadow Lord's attention away. In this new life, Endon worked as a blacksmith, a craft at which he became highly skilled, eventually forging a powerful sword for his son.
Living in hiding for sixteen years as a commoner, Endon reflected deeply on his past and developed a profound sense of self-loathing, mixed with a powerful desire to atone for his failures as a king. Though he intended to go on the quest to retrieve the Belt's gems himself, he was crippled when a falling tree injured his leg when Lief was ten years old, forcing him to accept that his son would have to fulfill his pledge. He and Sharn convinced the former palace guard Barda to let Lief accompany him on the quest, preparing Lief for the journey by allowing him to take risks on the dangerous streets of Del. On Lief's sixteenth birthday, Endon revealed the truth of the quest and presented him with the finest sword he had ever forged, a map to the gems, and the reforged Belt of Deltora.
While Lief was on his quest, Endon and Sharn were captured and imprisoned to be used as bait. During his imprisonment, Endon was interrogated by Fallow, a servant of the Shadow Lord, but refused to break. He drew strength from the knowledge that his son was succeeding, and his unwavering defiance became a source of courage for Lief, who witnessed the interrogation through magical means. In the final battle for Del, Endon was mortally wounded while urging Lief to put on the completed Belt. He died happy, having seen a free Deltora once more and having been reunited with his childhood friend, Jarred, to whom he was finally able to reveal the full truth of their deception.
In terms of notable abilities, Endon was a highly capable blacksmith, able to reforge the shattered Belt of Deltora and craft a sword of exceptional quality for his son. His greatest skill, however, was his ability to maintain a disguise for sixteen years, passing as his friend Jarred without ever drawing suspicion, even while living in the same community where the real Jarred had been a well-known figure.
