Description
Prandine is a supporting antagonist in the anime Deltora Quest. He is a Grade 3 Ol, a shapeshifting servant of the Shadow Lord, who spends years embedded in the royal court of Deltora as chief advisor to King Alton and later to King Endon. He has held the position since Prince Endon and Jarred were young boys, which makes him one of the most long-serving and trusted figures in the palace.

In public, Prandine maintains the air of a serious, grumpy man devoted to the Rule and to the King. He appears to manage the kingdom's affairs competently, and his office gives him control over nearly all matters of governance. In truth, he is a cold and cruel individual with an unshakeable loyalty to the Shadow Lord. His mission, like that of the chief advisors before him, is to deceive the royal family into helplessness and ensure that they will have no support from the people by the time the Shadow Lord makes his move. He orders the destruction of the Deltora Annals to rob the kingdom of its history, and he falsely tells King Alton that the Grippers have gone extinct, leaving the realm unprepared for dangers that still exist.

Prandine murders King Alton and his queen with a poisoned knife and covers the act by claiming that they died of illness. When Jarred, Endon's friend, begins to suspect that something is wrong and urges Endon to wear the Belt of Deltora as the first king Adin once did, Prandine accuses Jarred of treason and drives him out of the palace. Years later, as the Shadow Lord's plan reaches its final stage, he silences Min, the nursemaid who uncovered the plot. When the gems of the Belt have been scattered and the Belt itself shattered, Prandine confronts Endon, Jarred, and Sharn in the highest tower of the palace, holding Sharn at knifepoint. He reveals his true allegiance and admits that he was responsible for the deaths of Endon's parents, but he underestimates Sharn. She tricks him into looking out the window by claiming that help has arrived, and when he does, she pushes him to his death.

Prandine's key relationships all revolve around his deception. To King Alton and King Endon, he appears to be a loyal counselor while in reality engineering their downfall. To Jarred, he is an accuser who destroys his place at court and forces him into exile. To Min, he is her murderer. To Sharn, he is an enemy whose arrogance costs him his life. The defining relationship is with the Shadow Lord, to whom he owes absolute obedience and for whom he works from within to bring Deltora down.

The character undergoes little personal change because he is a hidden agent rather than a figure who evolves. The story builds around the slow revelation of his dual nature, with the supposedly loyal advisor gradually exposed as the architect of the kingdom's ruin. His exposure marks the moment when the royal family understands the full depth of the betrayal, and he does not waver or reform, remaining a devoted servant of the Shadow Lord until the end.

His notable abilities include long-term deception and political manipulation, through which he controls palace affairs and hides the truth from the royal family. As an Ol, he is a shapeshifter, and his human appearance is a disguise maintained over many years. He also uses a poisoned knife to carry out the murders of King Alton and his queen. His strengths are those of a spy and saboteur rather than a warrior, and his effectiveness comes from the trust he earns and then abuses.
