Description
Koichiro Iketani serves as the leader of the Akina SpeedStars, a local street racing team, and works at a gas station in Shibukawa alongside his younger colleagues Takumi Fujiwara and Itsuki Takeuchi. While not an exceptionally gifted driver, he possesses the most skill among his teammates and leads them with genuine passion and a strong sense of pride for his home mountain of Akina. His commitment to his team is demonstrated by a fierce desire to prove that Akina has talented drivers, which leads him to seek the help of a local tofu shop owner rumored to be the fastest on the mountain, an action that inadvertently launches Takumi’s racing career.
Personality-wise, Iketani is earnest, hardworking, and knowledgeable about cars, often serving as a source of information and advice for Takumi and Itsuki. He is generally level-headed and tries to remain calm under pressure, but he also has a timid and passive side, particularly when it comes to romance. This insecurity is a major part of his character, leading him to jump to conclusions and miss opportunities, a flaw that becomes central to his personal story. Despite this, he is fundamentally kind and responsible, shown when he feels genuine guilt after unintentionally hurting a friend's feelings or when he stops to help a stranded elderly man, even when it jeopardizes his own plans.
His most significant role in the series is as a mentor and friend to Takumi. Iketani introduces Takumi to the world of street racing and uses his own practical knowledge to explain concepts like car chassis codes and driving techniques. He is often the one who recognizes the potential in Takumi, even when he does not fully understand it himself. In terms of ability behind the wheel, Iketani drives a Nissan Silvia K's (S13) and is known for having good corner entry technique. However, his skills are average, and he is known to make mistakes, such as spinning out when he becomes overconfident on an S-curve. His own racing experience is a constant process of learning and improvement, often with Takumi as an unintentional instructor.
Key relationships define much of his development. At work and on the mountain, he is close friends with Itsuki and Kenji, forming the core of the SpeedStars. The most pivotal relationship in Iketani’s life, however, is with Mako Sato, a talented driver from the Usui Pass team Impact Blue. Their romance is explored in depth in the OVA series dedicated to her story, where Iketani’s romantic anxieties come to the forefront. After a promising start where Mako gives him her phone number, Iketani’s fear and indecisiveness cause him to arrive late to a planned meeting, leading to a painful misunderstanding and a six-month separation. During this period, he is consumed by regret, convinced he has ruined his chance and that Mako has moved on.
Iketani experiences notable development throughout his story arc, particularly in how he confronts his own shortcomings. When he unexpectedly reunites with Mako and later arranges a second meeting, he is determined not to repeat the same mistake, arriving two hours early to ensure he does not miss her. This demonstrates a clear lesson learned from past failure. However, his growth is tempered by his characteristic selflessness; when he learns that Mako has been offered an opportunity to become a professional racer, he decides to hold back his own feelings, fearing that confessing would hold her back. This bittersweet resolution shows that his development is not about becoming bold, but about prioritizing another person's happiness over his own desires. In the end, while he gains confidence in his commitment and learns from his errors, his fate remains one of unfulfilled potential in love, defined by circumstance and his own gentle nature.
