Description
Iru is one of the Guardian Characters belonging to Utau Hoshina, and is notably her first to be born. She is the counterpart to Utau's other Guardian Character, Eru, and represents a more devilish and wild aspect of her creator's personality. Iru was born from Utau's heartfelt desire to become a rock star and to captivate a large audience with her powerful, edgy music. Her very name is derived from the English word devil, which perfectly aligns with her demonic theme and aesthetic.
In appearance, Iru is small and has a distinctly devil-like look. She has short, dark purplish or black hair, and on her head are small red or black horns. She possesses a set of black bat wings on her back and a long, thin black tail with a spade-shaped tip. Her outfit often consists of a red, batwing-shaped top and bottom, paired with red or black boots. The egg she hatches from is also thematic, featuring a magenta and black lace pattern.
Iru's personality is as spirited and mischievous as her appearance suggests. She is a wild and untamed character who quickly becomes bored with peace, quiet, and order, much preferring chaos and excitement. She has a great love for rock music, which is the genre that allows her and Utau to truly shine. True to her devilish nature, she is often rude to people, including Utau's former manager, Yukari Sanjo, and delights in teasing and taunting her angelic fellow Guardian Character, Eru. The Shugo Chara! Encyclopedia! describes her as someone who loves to tease others but absolutely hates being preached at or lectured. Despite her troublesome tendencies, she is not inherently evil; she simply represents a part of Utau that is aggressive, passionate, and hungry for attention.
Iru's role in the story is closely tied to Utau's journey and her struggles with her own identity and dreams. For a significant period, Utau, manipulated by the Easter corporation, neglects Iru and her pure intentions, finding more use in the corrupted X-Dia. Feeling lonely and rejected, Iru temporarily allies herself with the protagonist, Amu Hinamori, jealous and resentful of being deemed useless compared to X-Dia. This alliance allows Iru to experience a different kind of bond and to be reminded of her true purpose. Later, after realizing what she can truly achieve by pursuing her dreams in a way that is true to Utau, Iru returns to her owner's side, becoming an integral part of Utau's reformation as an artist who sings for the joy of her fans. She is a key player in Utau's character development, representing the raw, ambitious drive that needs to be balanced with Eru's compassionate and gentle nature.
Iru’s key relationships are primarily with her owner, Utau, and her fellow Guardian Character, Eru. She shares a deep but complicated bond with Utau, from whom she was born and with whom she can perform a Character Transformation. She is also the constant rival and foil to the angelic Eru, and their bickering and contrasting natures highlight the duality within Utau’s heart. Iru also forms a temporary but significant working relationship with Amu Hinamori. When she allies with Amu, they are able to perform their own unique Character Transformation and Character Change, demonstrating a rare compatibility between two different people’s Guardian Characters.
Iru possesses several notable abilities, both on her own and in conjunction with her human partners. Like many Guardian Characters, she can fly and sense the presence of X-Eggs, X-Characters, and other Guardian Characters. Through a Character Change with Utau, Utau gains a pair of black bat wings, granting her the ability to fly. In this form, Utau also gains the disturbing power to pull out the Heart's Eggs from her audience members and turn them directly into X-Eggs. When Utau and Iru perform a full Character Transformation, they become Lunatic Charm, a powerful and frightening devil-like form. In this transformation, Utau wears a red dress with bat wings and wields a weapon such as a trident. Lunatic Charm’s primary special attack is Nightmare Lorelei, which can unleash a hurricane of bats or butterflies to overwhelm opponents. However, Iru is also capable of a temporary alliance with Amu. Through a Character Change, Amu can also sprout bat wings and fly. Their single, unique Character Transformation is known as Amulet Devil, which equips Amu with an electric guitar. Amulet Devil’s only known attack is Devil’s Tune, a powerful shockwave of loud, destructive rock music used to suppress negative energy.
