Description
Eiji Shinozuka is a hanyou, a half-demon, who serves as the mayoral assistant and bodyguard to Kazuyoshi Morino, the former mayor of a town neighboring Sakurashinmachi. A naturally secretive individual, not much is known about his past, but it is established that he originally lived in Sakurashinmachi. As a child, he experienced a fall and was saved by Makiharu Hiizumi, an event that left him struggling with feelings of guilt over the trouble he caused. This remorse eventually led him to decide to leave his hometown. Before departing, he was guided to the neighboring town by Machi Yarizakura and introduced to Kazuyoshi Morino, then an upcoming mayoral candidate. Eiji accepted Morino’s invitation to stay in that town, and over time, his deep sense of obligation transformed into unwavering loyalty as he became Morino's dedicated assistant.
Eiji’s personality is defined by a strict personal code of conduct reminiscent of feudal Japanese warriors, where loyalty and duty to his master are paramount, almost absolute in their power. He follows his lord's orders without complaint, even when those commands contradict his own personal ethics, as his sense of duty overrides his individual preferences. At his core, he personally prefers a merciful and good-hearted approach to dealing with people, yet he will carry out his responsibilities regardless. Despite his severe and focused demeanor, especially when working, he possesses a hidden playful and sometimes lonely side. Kotoha Isone, who affectionately calls him Zuka-chan, reveals this aspect of his character, noting that he has been known to mix up meeting places or ask others like Akina Hiizumi to go shopping or have tea with him, showing a desire for connection.
In the story, Eiji's primary role is as the loyal secretary and bodyguard to Mayor Morino, a position through which he comes into conflict with the main characters of Sakurashinmachi. His motivations are heavily rooted in gratitude; Morino took him in and raised him, and becoming his secretary is how Eiji chooses to repay that kindness. While his role is generally that of a supporting character and not a central member of the main party, he demonstrates strong situational awareness and is not easily outmatched in combat. He was able to pressure Kyosuke Kishi, an oni known for his power, with his superior speed, and he instinctively recognized the danger posed by other powerful fighters. His key relationships include his master, Kazuyoshi Morino, to whom he is utterly devoted, and Kotoha Isone, a fellow hanyou who has a friendly rapport with him.
Regarding his development across different adaptations, Eiji's allegiance changes notably. In the original 2008 anime and the subsequent 2013 anime, Hana no Uta, his origins and alliance mostly follow the manga, where he is Morino's assistant. However, in the first 2008 television anime adaptation, his role is significantly altered; there he serves as a hanyou working under Enjin Hiizumi, the main antagonist, acting as his associate and right-hand man. The 2008 anime also gave him an original ability, high-speed movement.
As a hanyou, Eiji possesses superhuman abilities that far exceed those of a normal human. He has demonstrated greatly enhanced strength, being able to easily lift a moped with one hand, and remarkable speed, capable of dodging Kotoha Isone’s machine gun fire. In the Hana no Uta adaptation, when he uses his enhanced speed, his hair and eyebrows glow pink. His fighting style, as seen in the 2008 anime, is speed-oriented melee combat, where he uses his agility to overwhelm opponents. At one point in that adaptation, he attempts to convince Kotoha to join him, appealing to her past suffering as a hanyou, before being driven back in battle.
