Description
Akina Hiizumi is the 18-year-old human director of the Hiizumi Life Counseling Office in Sakurashin Town and the successor of the Hiizumi Clan, a family that has protected the town for generations. Born on March 3, he stands 173 centimeters tall with short, messy black hair. He typically dresses in casual clothing such as polo shirts, vests, trousers, and sneakers. He enjoys cooking, cleaning, and sewing, holds a level three certificate in abacus calculation, and counts curry as his favorite food.
Akina is generally cheerful, light-spirited, and cordial with everyone he meets. He is kind-hearted, hard-working, and responsible, yet humble despite his powerful inherited abilities. He is observant when a friend is in need and offers encouragement, though he tends to be oblivious to girls who have crushes on him. While usually calm and friendly, he becomes genuinely frightening when seriously angered. He rarely shows fatigue or worry, keeping his burdens to himself, which has led some to call him a daytime lantern. He often acts as the straight man among his friends, correcting their antics, and is the one who typically stops his colleague Hime Yarizakura from going overboard.
Akina was raised by his grandfather, Makiharu Hiizumi, following the death of his parents. During his childhood, after Hime had most of her yokai powers sealed away, leaving a scar on her neck that bothered her, Akina knitted a long scarf for her to hide the mark, a gift she continues to cherish. He grew up as friends with Hime, Ao Nanami, Kotoha Isone, Kyosuke Kishi, and others. When Kyosuke and his sister Touka came to live with Hime, Akina was the first to greet and befriend them.
His primary motivation is to protect Sakurashin Town and maintain the peaceful balance between humans and yokai. Many of his friends are yokai who, according to his family’s tradition, might wish to be sent to the Otherworld. He does not want to say goodbye to any of them, and this reluctance drives him to fight. Rather than unconditionally tuning yokai to send them away, he prioritizes healing their inner wounds so they can live well in this world, working toward coexistence. His role in the story is as director of the life counseling office, where he helps residents with various troubles. In battle, his physical abilities are inferior to his teammates, so he often serves in a supportive role, which sometimes frustrates him. However, his friends reassure him that he has become the pillar for the town’s supernatural beings.
Akina’s notable ability is Tuning, the power he inherited as the Oyakume of the Hiizumi Clan. This ability allows him to send objects, projectiles, or beings to the Otherworld. When he uses Tuning, his hair grows longer, a state sometimes called Duty Mode. He can also perform Partial Tuning, which allows him to exorcise fallen individuals without sending them to the Otherworld. Using Tuning too much in a short period causes him to become out of alignment with the human dimension, leading his hair to grow further, his arm to turn black, and his body to suffer intense pain. To realign himself and recover, he must make physical contact with a human being from this dimension. According to Enjin, the power of Dropping also lies dormant within Akina, though he has yet to demonstrate it. Due to the physical toll of his powers, he is required to have monthly medical checkups.
