Description
Miharu Rokujou is a fourteen-year-old middle school student and the main protagonist of the story. He is the bearer of the Shinra Banshou, a secret ninja art of immense power that contains knowledge of all things in the hidden ninja world of Nabari. This art is inscribed into his body, making him a target for various ninja clans who seek to control it and effectively become the ruler of Nabari. He is physically short for his age, with black hair and green eyes.
Miharu's background is marked by tragedy: he lost his parents at a very young age and retains almost no memory of his childhood. He was raised without strong attachments and initially shows little interest in his own past or his extraordinary gift. His upbringing has led him to adopt a deeply apathetic and indifferent demeanor, which he uses as a defense mechanism to keep others at a distance and protect them from the dangers surrounding him. Despite this façade, he is not incapable of warmth; he occasionally displays a playful, innocent charm to manipulate situations or achieve his own ends, but genuine emotional engagement is rare.
His motivations shift over the course of the story. Early on, his only personal ambition is to inherit his family's okonomiyaki shop, a mundane goal that contrasts sharply with the epic conflicts he is drawn into. After meeting Yoite, a young ninja from the Grey Wolves who wields the dangerous Kira technique and wishes for his own existence to be erased, Miharu’s priorities change. He promises Yoite that he will use the Shinra Banshou to grant that wish, and this goal becomes the central driving force behind his actions. He is willing to take great risks and undergo painful personal growth for the sake of that promise.
In the narrative, Miharu is initially a reluctant participant in the ninja world. He is protected by two members of the Banten Village: his teacher Tobari Durandal Kumohira and his classmate Koichi Aizawa, both of whom are ninja. He is also allied with Raimei Shimizu, a samurai from the Fuuma Village. As various factions hunt him for the Shinra Banshou, Miharu is forced to become more involved, ultimately embracing his role as a potential king of Nabari. His journey involves learning to master the Shinra Banshou, which grants the ability to manipulate reality itself, though doing so carries heavy consequences.
Key relationships shape Miharu’s development. His bond with Yoite is the most significant; it awakens genuine care and a desire to protect someone else, slowly eroding his emotional detachment. Tobari acts as a steadfast guardian who wants to suppress the Shinra Banshou rather than see it used, creating a tension with Miharu’s promise to Yoite. Aizawa is both a friend and a fellow immortal whose own history with the Shinra Banshou adds depth to Miharu’s understanding of the art’s legacy. Raimei provides a sense of duty and loyalty that also influences Miharu’s growth.
Over the course of the story, Miharu undergoes a clear transformation. He starts as a disaffected boy who cares for nothing, but he gradually learns to trust others and confront the pain of his past. The climax of his development occurs when he fulfills his promise to Yoite by erasing Yoite’s existence using the Shinra Banshou, an act that leaves Miharu emotionally shaken and eventually leads to the loss of his memories of Yoite. However, the story concludes with him beginning to recover, expressing a desire to speak openly about those he has lost, and finally embracing a life free from fear.
Notable abilities include the Shinra Banshou itself, which allows Miharu to alter reality, erase existences, and access vast knowledge. He is also skilled at psychological manipulation, using his appearance of indifference and occasional feigned innocence to influence those around him. His growth as a character is reflected in his increasing control over this power, moving from hesitant and uncertain to decisive and willing to accept the consequences of its use.
