Description
Hikoichi Aida is a first-year student at Ryonan High School and a member of the school's basketball team. Physically, he is notably small for a basketball player, standing 165 centimeters tall and weighing 52 kilograms, with black hair and black eyes. While he is officially a player, he is not skilled enough to compete at the level of the starting lineup. Instead, he spends most of his time on the bench with the reserves, often staying close to Ryonan's head coach, Moichi Taoka. This has led him to take on a role more akin to a team manager or a scout, dedicating himself to the detailed observation and analysis of other teams' strengths and weaknesses.

Hikoichi's personality is marked by high energy and enthusiasm. He is easily excited by the action on the court, frequently shouting "Unbelievable!" when something impressive occurs during a match. His most defining trait is his dedication to gathering intelligence, which is reflected in his famous catchphrase, "Gotta check it out!". He is almost always seen with a notebook in hand, meticulously recording observations about players' moves, habits, and statistics. This habit may have been influenced by his older sister, Yayoi Aida, who is a reporter for a weekly basketball magazine. Despite his thoroughness as a scout, Hikoichi can be absent-minded and is easily impressed, sometimes even forgetting which team he is supposed to be supporting in the heat of the moment.

Hikoichi's primary motivation is to contribute to his team in the most effective way he can. Unable to make a difference with his physical play, he dedicates himself to his self-appointed role as an intelligence gatherer. He sees his work as a way to level the playing field and provide a strategic advantage to Ryonan. He holds a deep admiration for players who, despite physical disadvantages, achieve greatness. This is most evident in his idolization of Shohoku's point guard, Ryota Miyagi, who is a starter for his team despite being only slightly taller than Hikoichi himself. He also forms an instant and lasting admiration for Hanamichi Sakuragi. When they first meet, Sakuragi's overwhelming confidence and bold personality impress Hikoichi so much that he decides Sakuragi must be a great player, even referring to him as an older brother figure.

His position on the team places him in constant interaction with Coach Taoka, to whom he often provides commentary during games, a habit that can sometimes be disruptive but also demonstrates his eagerness to be involved. His most significant relationship outside of Ryonan is with his sister, Yayoi. Her professional access to the basketball world and her own analytical mind likely inspired Hikoichi's approach to the game, even though she is primarily assigned to cover Shohoku's matches rather than his own team. Throughout the series, Hikoichi shows development in his dedication to scouting. His role expands beyond simply watching games for personal knowledge. During the national tournament, he takes the initiative to travel to Osaka to investigate a future opponent. He compiles detailed intelligence and goes out of his way to send this vital information via fax to Shohoku High, cheering for their success even though they are a rival school. This act shows his passion for the sport transcends simple team loyalty, as he genuinely wants strong teams to perform well.

As a scout, Hikoichi's notable ability is his painstaking attention to detail. He is self-styled as a master of the "check," and his reports are thorough enough to be of real strategic use to a team. However, his effectiveness is sometimes undercut by his absent-mindedness; for example, he was fully aware of the exploits of star player Kaede Rukawa but confused Rukawa's face with that of the less skilled Sakuragi, whom he saw practicing alone. This combination of sharp data collection and a somewhat flawed human element makes him a unique and memorable supporting character.
