Description
Kazushi Hasegawa is a third-year student at Shoyo High School, a renowned basketball powerhouse in Kanagawa Prefecture. Standing at 190 centimeters (approximately 6 feet 3 inches) and weighing 80 kilograms, he plays as a forward and wears jersey number six. His birthday is August 8.

Hasegawa is characterized by a quiet and modest personality, often appearing unassuming and lacking in visible aggression, which his teammates note can prevent him from fully displaying his abilities on the court. Despite this, he is regarded as a hardworking player and a valuable asset to the team, one who can become a key player when given the right motivation. As Shoyo has no formal coach, the team is led by its captain and star point guard, Kenji Fujima, who recognizes Hasegawa´s potential and appreciates the moments when his reserved nature gives way to competitive fire.

The core of Hasegawa´s personal motivation and his central role in the story is rooted in his history with Hisashi Mitsui. During a junior high school tournament, Hasegawa faced Mitsui, then an MVP-caliber player, and was completely outplayed, suffering a loss that left a lasting impression. Years later, he was shocked to encounter Mitsui again, this time as a delinquent who had abandoned basketball, a sight that contrasted sharply with the formidable opponent from his memory. When Mitsui later returns to the sport and Shoyo faces Shohoku in the Kanagawa Interhigh Tournament, Hasegawa sees an opportunity to confront his past. His motivations are driven by a need to prove that his three years of dedicated, uninterrupted effort in high school basketball have made him superior to the prodigal Mitsui, who he feels has disrespected the sport by walking away and then returning on a whim.

In the critical match against Shohoku, Hasegawa volunteers to guard Mitsui in a box-and-one defense, a strategy designed to shut down a single dominant player. Before the game, he declares with confidence that he will hold Mitsui to no more than five points. This remark is accidentally overheard by Mitsui, who becomes enraged and motivated. Throughout the game, Hasegawa´s tight, relentless defense is effective for a significant period, holding Mitsui to very few points well into the second half and helping Shoyo build a 12-point lead. His most memorable line, delivered to a struggling Mitsui, is a defiant challenge: "Don´t underestimate high school basketball".

However, this moment becomes the turning point. Mitsui, awakening his former competitive spirit, unleashes a scoring barrage, sinking five consecutive three-pointers to erase the lead and ultimately finish with 20 points, far exceeding Hasegawa´s guarantee. This sequence represents Hasegawa´s key development; despite his meticulous preparation and personal conviction, he is a testament to the power of a player who has rediscovered their passion. In defeat, he forces Mitsui to confront the seriousness of the game, and his own efforts—though ultimately unsuccessful—are portrayed as the catalyst for one of the series´ most iconic comebacks.

His notable abilities lie primarily in his defense. He is known for being a tenacious on-ball defender, using his height and positioning to contest shots effectively, particularly from mid-range and beyond the three-point line. His game is not flashy, but it is fundamentally sound, relying on effort, discipline, and a strong understanding of defensive strategy rather than explosive offensive talent.
