Description
Haia Salinban Laia, also known in some sources as Haia Salinvan Lyia, is a supporting character who serves as a rival and eventual ally within the narrative of Chrome Shelled Regios. He is introduced as the leader of the Salinvan Guidance Mercenary Gang, a group that operates independently of the student-run military platoons of the mobile city Zuellni. His arrival in Zuellni is under clandestine circumstances, as he initially accompanies illegal drug traffickers as a means to gain access to the city, though he clarifies that he is not personally involved in their criminal activities.
Possessing a strong and ambitious personality, Haia is driven by a powerful desire to prove his own strength and superiority. This manifests most clearly in his intense rivalry with the protagonist, Layfon Alseif. Haia is acutely aware of Layfon’s reputation as a former Heaven’s Blade successor and repeatedly seeks to challenge him in combat to demonstrate that he is the better warrior. His competitive nature fuels many of his early actions, and he is undeterred by repeated defeats, as he loses to Layfon in every one of their initial confrontations. Despite this single-minded drive, he is not depicted as a villain. He is a highly trained and disciplined combatant who operates with a sense of professionalism as a mercenary leader.
Haia’s primary motivation is to achieve recognition and to surpass the legendary status of the Heaven’s Blades. His goal is eventually fulfilled when he wins a succession battle, allowing him to inherit the title of Heaven’s Blade from Layfon. He subsequently takes on the name Haia Wolfstein Lyia, signifying his official recognition as a warrior of the highest caliber. This progression from a rival outsider to a formal successor is the core of his character arc.
Within the story, Haia initially functions as a direct physical challenge for Layfon, forcing the protagonist to engage in serious combat. As the plot advances, particularly during the crises involving the Contaminoids and the Haikizoku, his role shifts from rival to a grudging ally. He becomes a key player in the defense of Zuellni, fighting alongside Layfon’s group against common threats. Haia also plays a significant role in the subplot concerning Dinn Dee, where he confronts and captures the fallen one—a Haikizoku—that was possessing Dinn. He is shown to be knowledgeable about this dangerous entity, which he describes as an insane electronic fairy of a ruined city. This demonstrates that his experience extends beyond mere physical combat.
His key relationship is, without question, with Layfon Alseif. Their dynamic begins as a hostile rivalry and gradually transforms into a relationship of mutual respect, culminating in Haia inheriting Layfon’s title. He also interacts with other characters like Nina Antalk and Sharnid Elipton during joint missions, though these interactions are less extensively defined. Haia also comes into conflict with the military and political leadership of Zuellni, such as Student Council President Karian Loss, due to his unwillingness to cooperate with official strategies and his independent nature.
In terms of development, Haia evolves from a mysterious and antagonistic mercenary leader into a recognized and powerful ally. His defeat and subsequent succession of the Heaven’s Blade title mark a major transition, cementing his identity not as an outsider seeking to prove himself, but as an established, elite warrior. This journey validates his single-minded pursuit of strength and provides a resolution to his primary motivation.
Regarding his abilities, Haia is a remarkably skilled Military Artist, noted to be a truly well-trained warrior. He is a master swordsman, displaying particular proficiency with a katana. His skill is such that in his first encounter with Layfon, he is able to break Layfon’s dite, a feat that demonstrates his exceptional level of power and technique. While he ultimately loses to Layfon, the fact that he is considered a worthy rival and the eventual successor to Wolfstein’s Heaven’s Blade confirms his standing among the most formidable fighters in the world.
