Description
Queen Alshera Almonis, whose name is alternately translated as Alsheyra Almonis or Alcheilla Almonis, is the ruler of Glendan, the Lance Shelled City and the most powerful Regios in the world. Glendan is the birthplace of Military Arts and the seat of the royal family that commands the twelve Heaven's Blade wielders, the elite Military Artists who serve as the city's ultimate fighting force. As queen, Alshera stands at the head of this order, and in appearance she is an adult woman with waist-length black hair and green eyes.
What separates her from a purely ceremonial monarch is that she is herself a Heaven's Blade wielder, and the strongest one the royal family has ever produced. Her power vastly exceeds that of the other twelve, and she is described as having defeated three of them simultaneously in an instant. In the light novels, her perception is far greater than that of any other Military Artist, to the point that she can see other Regios from miles away and can even strike Contaminoids from that extreme distance. The source material emphasizes that she possesses a transcendent level of kei, the internal energy used by Military Artists, such that even the Heaven's Blade receivers cannot compare to her.
Her personality is portrayed as indolent and arrogant, though these traits are tempered by an underlying diligence and a capacity for kindness. She does not dismiss hard work or ignore the needs of others, but she carries herself with the easy confidence of someone who has long been beyond challenge. Bored with the confines of her royal life, she chooses to leave the castle and live under the disguise of Synola Leiser, a senior laboratory student, in order to experience what it is like to be an ordinary girl. During her absences, the Heaven's Blade wielder Kanaris Earifon Rivin, who closely resembles her and possesses the ability to impersonate others, acts as her double and carries out the duties of the queen in her place.
Her motivations are closely tied to her identity as a ruler and as a warrior. In the novels it is revealed that Glendan's royal family consists of three branches that intermarry every three generations, a structure that shapes her understanding of her own position. She states that her life is meaningless without the twelve Heaven's Blades, indicating that she defines herself not merely by her crown but by the martial order she commands and protects. Despite her lazy and proud demeanor, she takes her responsibility for the city and its elite warriors seriously, and she acts decisively when the situation demands it.
Her role in the story is connected strongly to the protagonist Layfon Alseif, a former Heaven's Blade wielder who abandoned Glendan and its royal service years before the events of the series. As the queen who once commanded him, she represents both the authority he fled from and the unresolved weight of his past. Their relationship is one of distance rather than closeness, yet she ultimately signals that Layfon and all those connected to him have been forgiven by the royal family, suggesting that the enmity between the crown and her former swordsman has softened over time. Her bond with Kanaris is one of practical trust, since Kanaris must convincingly rule in her place, and the resemblance between them is occasionally noted by others.
Her development is conveyed largely through the contrast between her two lives. As queen, she is remote, powerful, and somewhat removed from the struggles of ordinary people; as Synola, she moves among common citizens and gains a perspective that her throne would never allow. This dual existence reflects a quiet dissatisfaction with the isolation of her position and a desire to understand the world she governs from closer range. Over the course of the narrative, she moves from a figure who observes Layfon's path from afar to one who acknowledges his worth and releases him from the shadow of his former betrayal. Her character is defined by the unusual combination of supreme martial ability, royal authority, personal laziness, and a concealed warmth that emerges through her choices rather than her words.
