Description
Queen Alsheyra Almonis is the ruling monarch of the Lance Shelled City Glendan, the powerful city recognized as the birthplace of the Military Arts and the seat of the Twelve Heaven's Blades. She heads the Almonis coronation line of Glendan's royal family, which in the novels is described as having three branches that intermarry every three generations. She is an adult woman with long black hair reaching her waist and green eyes.
Alsheyra is herself one of the Twelve Heaven's Blade wielders and is regarded as the strongest in the history of the royal family, with power far exceeding that of the other wielders. She is said to have defeated three Heaven's Blade Receivers simultaneously and in an instant. Her mastery of kei, the energy that Military Artists use to fight, is so overwhelming that even the elite Heaven's Blade Receivers do not measure up to her.
Her personality is marked by indolence and pride, though she is not entirely dismissive of diligence and is not without kindness. She grows bored with her royal duties and the rigid order of the court, which leads her to abandon the palace and live as an ordinary person under the alias Synola Leiser, a senior laboratory student. The Heaven's Blade Receiver Kanaris Earifon Rivin, who possesses the ability to impersonate others, is pressed into service as her double on the throne while she is away. The two resemble each other closely, though Alsheyra has green eyes while Kanaris has purple eyes. Alsheyra eventually refuses to return to the palace and continues wandering under her assumed identity while Kanaris keeps covering for her.
Her central motivation is the desire to escape the monotony and constraints of royal life and experience a more ordinary existence. At the same time, the Twelve Heaven's Blades hold deep personal meaning for her, and she states in the novels that her life would be meaningless without them.
In the story, her position ties her to the elite warriors who serve Glendan's royal family, and her connection to the main narrative runs through Layfon Wolfstein Alseif, the exiled former Heaven's Blade Receiver from Glendan. In the novels she hints that Layfon and those connected to him have been forgiven by the royal family. Her relationship with Kanaris is built on reluctant mutual dependence, as Kanaris is forced to maintain the illusion of the queen's presence while Alsheyra pursues her freedom. Her development centers on her rejection of the role she was born into and her insistence on living according to her own wishes, while still carrying the immense power and authority of Glendan's throne.
