Description
Maria Kurenai is a vampire who appears as a new student in the Night Class at Cross Academy. She has a petite build and pale skin, with grayish‑purple hair and eyes. She is a very distant relative of the late Pureblood vampire Shizuka Hio. Maria was born with a sickly and fragile constitution, which made her physically weak. In an effort to gain strength and good health, she made a pact with Shizuka: Maria allowed Shizuka to possess her body in exchange for being allowed to drink Shizuka’s blood. Because Shizuka was a Pureblood, her blood was believed to have the power to restore Maria’s health. However, Shizuka was killed before she could fulfill that promise, leaving Maria without the cure she had hoped for.
When Maria is first introduced, she appears haughty and cruel, but this demeanor is actually the result of Shizuka’s possession. Once Maria regains control of her own body, her true personality emerges. She is gentle, caring, and deeply honest. She does not hesitate to express her feelings and is straightforward in her interactions. Maria wishes to be seen as useful to her friends and is committed to helping them when she can. She is also shown to be fond of Ichiru Kiryu, developing feelings for him.
After Shizuka’s death, Maria returns to her family. Later, she sends an owl to search for Ichiru, and during that mission she witnesses Kaname Kuran’s destruction of the Vampire Council. She helps spread news of that event. When Yuuki Cross later reassembles the Night Class, Maria returns to Cross Academy. In the distant future, Maria survives for many years and becomes the leader of a group of vigilantes who work to capture the so‑called Vampire King or save lives. She remains active even a thousand years later, alongside other long‑lived characters.
Maria’s notable ability is animal manipulation, which she demonstrates by using an owl as a messenger. She is also proficient with a sword, though her fragile physique often makes her reliant on others for protection. Despite her physical weakness, her persistence and loyalty to her friends drive her actions throughout the story.
