Description
Hanabusa Aido is a prominent character who belongs to the noble class of vampires. He is the heir to the Aido family, one of the most prestigious aristocratic lineages in vampire society. Known for his wavy blond hair and turquoise eyes, he stands at approximately 177 to 180 centimeters in height and is seventeen years old during the events at Cross Academy. Among the Day Class female students, he is famously nicknamed Idol due to his handsome appearance and engaging demeanor.
His personality is marked by a striking duality. On the surface, he is exceptionally charismatic, cheerful, and friendly, often flirting and playing up to the Day Class girls who admire him. He enjoys the attention and appears socially well-adjusted. However, he can quickly become vindictive, cold, and impatient, revealing a selfish and sometimes cruel side beneath his charming exterior. This brash and impulsive nature frequently lands him in trouble, as he often oversteps boundaries without thinking through the consequences. Despite these flaws, he is recognized as a genius and a prodigy from a young age, having published research papers and collaborated with scientific institutes.
The central driving force behind Aido's actions is his fierce and unwavering loyalty to Kaname Kuran, the pureblood president of the Night Class. Alongside his cousin Akatsuki Kain, he is known as one of Kaname's right-hand men. Interestingly, as a child, he initially disliked Kaname out of jealousy, resenting the attention Kaname received. After Kaname lost his parents, Aido experienced a change of heart, swearing to become his most devoted protector and follower. His admiration is so intense that he has a collection of broken objects that Kaname has used or broken, treating them as treasures. He is deeply protective of Kaname and becomes dangerous if someone speaks ill of him.
His role within the story evolves significantly. Initially, he is largely a loyal follower who struggles with jealousy toward Yuki Cross, resenting the special attention Kaname gives her. He is careless about hiding his vampiric nature, often asking girls their blood type, and his rash actions frequently result in Kaname punishing him. Aido is highly observant; he was aware that Zero Kiryu was a vampire long before it was publicly known but chose not to reveal the secret as it did not benefit him. He also possesses immense curiosity, conducting his own investigations into the murder of Kaname's parents and the secrets of the Kuran family, often behind Kaname's back to prove his worth.
Regarding his key relationships, Aido shares a close, brotherly bond with his cousin and roommate Akatsuki Kain, though their personalities often clash. His relationship with Yuki Cross is complex and develops over time. He begins with condescension and annoyance, having difficulty even calling her by a respectful title. However, after witnessing Kaname kill a pureblood, he undergoes a crisis of faith but ultimately decides to remain loyal to Kaname. Later, when Yuki is revealed to be a pureblood of the Kuran line, he is appointed as one of her reluctant protectors and personal tutors. While he initially grumbles about this duty, he eventually grows to understand and respect her, becoming a genuinely faithful ally who stands by her side even in defiance of his former master.
In terms of development, Aido experiences significant tragedy and growth. He is deeply traumatized after witnessing his own father willingly submit to execution by Kaname. Though destroyed by this act, he resists giving in to hatred and instead reaffirms his loyalty to Yuki. His character transitions from a somewhat spoiled and brash aristocrat to a more mature and dedicated guardian. In later storylines, he develops a deep romantic relationship with Yuki's human friend, Sayori Wakaba. He loves her completely, but struggles with the immense sadness of their differing lifespans. After Sayori passes away, he is inspired to continue his research into developing a vaccine to turn vampires human, hoping to spare other couples from the same pain. As a noble-class vampire, his most notable ability is the power to create and control ice at will, as well as the ability to freeze matter.
