Description
Adalbert von Grantz is a former member of the Ten Noble Families, the highest-ranking aristocrats of Shin Makoku, the Demon Kingdom, as signified by the von in his name. He was once betrothed to Susanna Julia von Wincott, a renowned healer and one of the most powerful mages in the realm. Her death during a war between humans and demons became the defining trauma of his life, causing him to abandon his homeland and swear vengeance against the Mazoku, whom he blamed for his loss. He rejected demon society, viewing the Mazoku as mere instruments of the Original King, Shinou, and left to live among humans, though he held no particular fondness for humanity.

Physically, Adalbert is an adult man with a rugged appearance, long blonde hair typically slicked back, blue eyes, and a cleft chin. His attire is similar to the standard Demon Tribe uniform but distinguished by a longer collar and a light brown cloak. He is a capable swordsman, skilled enough to hold his own against Conrad Weller, who is regarded as a master of the art. As a pure-blooded Mazoku, he possesses significant magical ability, and uniquely, he also mastered houjutsu, or human magic, granting him the rare versatility to wield both magical systems.

In the story, Adalbert is the first significant character that the protagonist Yuri Shibuya meets upon arriving in the other world. He saves Yuri from a hostile mob of villagers and performs a form of magic that awakens the demon language within Yuri’s soul, allowing him to understand the local tongue. Initially presented as an antagonist, Adalbert tries to persuade Yuri to abandon the Mazoku, condemning their society as corrupt. When persuasion fails, he resorts to attacking Yuri, but is driven off by Conrad Weller and later Gwendal von Voltaire. He harbors intense resentment toward Conrad, partly because Julia’s father favored Conrad, a half-human but exceptionally skilled swordsman, as a politically advantageous match for his daughter over Adalbert. This led to rumors that the engagement might be changed, though it is confirmed that Julia truly loved Adalbert and her bond with Conrad was one of mutual respect, not romance. The war and political maneuvering, including Prime Minister Stoffel forcing Conrad’s deployment, prevented resolution before Julia’s death.

Over time, Adalbert’s character evolves. He begins consumed by revenge and a desire to destroy Shin Makoku, but gradually shifts toward protecting Yuri as Julia’s reincarnation. He challenges Yuri to prove his worth as the new Demon King, revealing a conflicted but persistent attachment to his homeland’s future. His journey forces him to confront his unresolved grief over Julia, and he eventually finds a measure of peace by accepting Yuri’s connection to her and the decisions made by her father. Following the major conflicts, he settles in Seisakoku, signaling a move toward stability. There, he demonstrates domestic skills such as cooking and sewing, and forms a family unit with Maxine and her children, Jason and Freddy, marking a departure from his solitary, vengeful existence toward a life defined by care and responsibility.
