Description
Gegenhuber Griesela, often called Hube for short, is a supporting character. He is the cousin of Gwendal von Voltaire, a connection established through Gwendal's aunt who is Gegenhuber's mother. In appearance, he shares some similarities with his cousin, though he looks older due to a difficult life. His most distinguishing features are his gray hair, blue eyes, and an eyepatch covering his left eye. A skilled swordsman, his demeanor is shaped by a past marked by severe regret and hardship.

Before the main story begins, Gegenhuber was an ambitious and prejudiced noble who believed in the superiority of demons over humans. During the reign of the 26th Demon King, Cecilie von Spitzweg, he shared the expansionist views of her brother, Stoffel. He was complicit in sending mixed-blood demons, like Conrad Weller, into dangerous situations and famously failed to provide reinforcements to a unit led by Susanna Julia, an act that contributed to her death. For these crimes after the war, he was essentially exiled from the Demon Kingdom under the mission of searching for a lost artifact called the Mateki, a quest that kept him away from his homeland for twenty years.

His core motivation for much of the series is a profound sense of guilt and a wish for death as atonement for his past sins. He believes he is unworthy of happiness. This self-destructive tendency is challenged when he meets Yuri Shibuya, the new and compassionate Demon King. Despite trying to atone by dying, including a deliberate act of attacking Yuri to goad the protective Conrad into killing him, his life is spared by Yuri's command. This act of unexpected mercy becomes a turning point, and he eventually swears loyalty to Yuri, dedicating himself to protecting the young king.

Gegenhuber's role in the story is complex; he begins as an antagonist whose past actions haunt the present, but he evolves into a redeemed figure. His introduction occurs when Yuri, searching for the Mateki, meets Nicola, a woman pregnant with Gegenhuber's child. Yuri helps reunite them and, after learning of Gegenhuber's past, insists on saving his life despite the objections of others who suffered because of him.

His key relationships define his arc. With Gwendal, his cousin, the bond is strained by betrayal and the need for justice, though family ties ultimately prevent a fatal outcome. His relationship with Conrad is particularly fraught, as Conrad was one of those harmed by his past actions, making Conrad initially content to let him die. The most transformative relationships are with Yuri, whose forgiveness offers him a new path, and with Nicola and his future child, who give him a reason to live and seek redemption instead of death. He is also the one who gave the Demon King's insignia to Greta, which allowed her to claim a false identity.

Throughout his journey, Gegenhuber develops from a man broken by his own arrogance and guilt into a humbled and loyal vassal. An important detail from his backstory explains his missing eye: while in the human world, he was captured by humans who possessed one of the Four Forbidden Boxes. Believing a demon to be the key to opening it, they tried to force him to use it, an attempt that failed and cost him his left eye. This event left him with a grim knowledge of the boxes. As a swordsman, his notable abilities are physical combat skills rather than magical prowess, and his defining trait becomes his unyielding, newfound loyalty to the Demon King who showed him mercy.
