Description
Maestre Kirisaki, whose real name is Sylvan Kirisaki, serves as the general manager of the Pantasia main branch and is a highly respected bread judge. He is a man of mysterious presence, almost never appearing in public without his signature titanium mask. The mask features a peacock feather that is actually still attached to a live bird, cleverly hidden using his expert skills in magic. As he tastes bread, the feathers in his mask can change depending on the quality of the loaf, offering a visual cue of his assessment. He has a devoted following of female fans who trail him whenever possible.
Sylvan is of mixed Japanese and French heritage, being the son of Yuuichi Kirisaki. His childhood was marked by hardship and abandonment. His mother, a young woman who owned a small bread store, met and fell in love with Yuuichi, who eventually left the family to pursue his dream of creating a traditional Japanese-style bread. He returned only once, not to reconcile, but to greedily consume all the loaves of bread he had brought in front of a young Sylvan. This act created a deep and lasting rift between father and son, a wound that never fully healed.
His difficult past drove him to become a baker to make a living. To attract customers to his bread, he learned and mastered the art of magic. This pursuit granted him extraordinary manual dexterity and finely tuned muscles in his hands, allowing him to knead dough in ways that others find unimaginable.
In the story, Maestre Kirisaki initially acts as a key ally and a supportive judge for Kazuma Azuma, holding a position of authority within Pantasia. He values Kazuma's talent and strives to protect the company from internal threats like Azusagawa Yukino. However, his role becomes more complex and antagonistic as the narrative progresses. He emerges as the last "assassin" representing St. Pierre, his father's baking conglomerate, driven by a desire to test his skills against Kazuma. In some iterations of the story, his infiltration of St. Pierre is motivated by a search for a recipe for a demonic bread, the Maou, which he believes is responsible for his father's cruel behavior. Upon eating the bread himself, he is brainwashed. After his defeat by Kazuma, he regains his senses and once again becomes a helpful figure to the protagonist.
His key relationships are defined by family conflict. He is the son of the powerful and enigmatic Yuuichi Kirisaki and the estranged brother of Sophie Balzac Kirisaki. His personal journey sees a significant development by the end of the series, where he is promoted by his reformed father to become the new head of St. Pierre.
Maestre Kirisaki possesses notable abilities that blend his two professions. As a baker, his judgment is highly refined, and he is considered an excellent bread artisan. As a magician, his skills are so advanced that they directly enhance his baking, granting him divine-level hand strength and precision. He can also perform the elaborate trick of producing multiple types of bird feathers from his mask, which are, in reality, live pets hidden through his illusions.
