Description
Battera is an elderly, multi-billionaire known for his immense wealth and his singular, desperate quest surrounding the rare video game Greed Island. He is an old gentleman with grey hair and pale skin, typically dressed in a formal suit complemented by a bow tie and a rose pinned to his lapel. Despite his advanced age and status, Battera is characterized by a calm, affable, and respectful demeanor, even extending patience and belief to young and unproven individuals like Gon Freecss and Killua Zoldyck when others dismissed them.

The primary driving force behind Battera's actions is a deeply personal tragedy. He was engaged to a much younger woman who, just before their wedding, was involved in a car accident that left her in a prolonged comatose state for over ten years. Their relationship was notably free of financial motives; she consistently refused his expensive gifts, instead cherishing a simple, handmade picture frame he crafted, and they had planned to abandon his wealth to start a new life together. Consumed by the desire to save her, Battera learned of two legendary cards within the game Greed Island: Angel's Breath, which could cure any illness or injury, and the Witch's Rejuvenation Potion, which could restore youth, the latter intended to bridge their age gap.

His role in the Greed Island arc is that of a patron and employer. Beginning in 1988, he used his vast fortune to buy as many copies of the game as possible, spending over half his total assets to corner the market and control information about it. He hired over one hundred Hunters, both professional and amateur, to enter the game and clear it on his behalf, offering a monumental reward of 50 billion Jenny for its completion. He is first seen at the Southern Peace Auction in Yorknew City, where he successfully bids against Milluki Zoldyck to acquire more copies. Battera delegated the practical task of player selection to his trusted partner, Tsezguerra, a Single-Star Hunter, and accepted Gon and Killua into his recruitment pool after observing their determination.

Battera's key relationships are defined by his love for his fiancée and his business partnership with Tsezguerra. His entire character arc culminates in tragedy. While his team of hired players, including Gon and Tsezguerra, were still inside the game working towards its completion, his lover passed away in the real world. The news devastates him, and he withdraws into seclusion, canceling the 50 billion Jenny reward as his goal has become meaningless. Demonstrating his integrity even in grief, he honors his contracts by paying a substantial penalty fee of 35 billion Jenny to the players who had been working for him.

Battera himself possesses no notable Nen abilities, as he is not a Nen user, which is why he relies entirely on hiring others to play the game for him. His most notable ability is his immense financial power and his shrewd, strategic use of it, such as driving up auction prices to demoralize competitors. His development is one of a man whose immense resources and relentless determination are ultimately rendered futile by the simple, unavoidable passage of time and the finality of death, highlighting a poignant contrast between the fantastical solutions offered by Greed Island and the harsh realities of the outside world.
