Description
Issei Ryuudou is a supporting character in Fate/stay night, best known as the student council president of Homurahara Academy and a close friend of the protagonist, Shirou Emiya. As the second son of the head priest of the Ryuudou Temple, Issei was raised in a disciplined, traditional environment that greatly shaped his character and values. He lives at the temple with his family and walks two hours each day to attend school, a habit that speaks to his physical endurance and strong sense of duty. Looking to the future, he intends to follow in his father's footsteps and eventually become a Buddhist monk, despite admitting that his own ability to sense the supernatural is quite weak.
In terms of personality, Issei is serious, straight-laced, and deeply principled. He dislikes frivolity and trends, preferring quiet intellectual pursuits like crosswords and Go. As student council president, he is known for his strict, almost fearsome dedication to school rules and budgetary fairness, often clashing with sports clubs over funding distribution. His passion for reform can make him appear rigid, but he is not entirely inflexible and can be understanding when a situation calls for it. His dislike of women is a noted trait, but it stems more from his turbulent history with a specific person than a general phobia. He holds deep respect for Souichirou Kuzuki, a teacher lodging at his temple whom he calls big brother, and he trains in karate with him. Conversely, his primary nemesis is fellow student Rin Tohsaka. Their animosity dates back to middle school when they served together as student council president and vice president, a period that convinced Issei they could never get along. He frequently warns Shirou to be cautious of her, referring to her with great suspicion.
Issei's role in the story is primarily that of a normal person living an ordinary school life, which provides a stark contrast to the secret magical world of the Holy Grail War. Unaware of magic for most of the narrative, he represents the everyday reality from which Shirou is increasingly isolated. His most significant narrative function comes from his residence at Ryuudou Temple, which becomes the stronghold of the Servant Caster. This connection makes him an object of suspicion for other characters, leading to a memorable scene where Shirou strips him to check for Command Spells, proving his innocence as a non-participant. He also unwittingly provides key information about the mysterious woman (Caster) living at the temple.
His key relationships are central to his character. His friendship with Shirou Emiya is his most important personal bond. He values Shirou's cooking, often eating the meat dishes from his lunches since the temple diet is mostly vegetarian, and frequently asks Shirou to use his repair skills to fix broken school equipment. Issei is protective of Shirou, becoming suspicious of any woman who gets too close to him, including Rin and later Luvia Edelfelt in spin-off works. Despite his general distrust of women, he makes an immediate exception for Saber. Upon meeting her, he declares that he can tell she is a genuinely good person, a sharp contrast to his usual wariness.
Throughout the course of Fate/stay night, Issei undergoes little personal change as he remains largely unaware of the supernatural conflict. His development is instead revealed through his growing frustration with school politics and his anxiety over finding a worthy successor for the student council. A notable aspect of his story is the danger he faces unknowingly; Caster places a magical suggestion on him to kill anyone who inquires about her identity, but this is never acted upon in the main scenarios. In some story routes, he is caught in the crossfire of the war, such as when an attack on Ryuudou Temple leaves him and the other monks unconscious, or when he mourns the death of his mentor, Kuzuki.
Regarding notable abilities, Issei is a perfectly normal human with no magical talents whatsoever. However, he is an accomplished martial artist, skilled in karate and capable of performing kata with his teacher Kuzuki. His daily two-hour walk to school has also made him exceptionally fit. As a student, his charisma and organizational skills are formidable, making him a highly effective, if overworked, student council president. Beyond these, his only other talents are meditative practices like zazen and his strategic thinking in board games.
