Description
Archer is the Servant of the class Archer, summoned by Rin Tohsaka to participate in the Fifth Holy Grail War. Standing at 187 centimeters tall, he possesses tanned skin, white hair, and a distinctive red shroud that he wears as a cloak. His true identity is EMIYA, a version of Shirou Emiya from a parallel future who made a pact with the world to become a Heroic Spirit. This pact was born from a moment of crisis when he was confronted with a disaster that would claim hundreds of lives, and he wished for the power to create a miracle and save them. The price for this miracle was his service after death as a Counter Guardian, an agent tasked with eliminating threats to humanity's survival. He originates from a timeline similar to the Fate route of the Holy Grail War, where he summoned Saber, fought alongside her, and ultimately destroyed the Grail. However, his future diverged, leading him down a path of relentless training and bitter compromise.
On the surface, Archer presents himself as cynical, sarcastic, and aloof. He often appears confident to the point of arrogance and maintains an antisocial demeanor, showing little patience for what he considers foolishness. This hardened exterior, however, conceals a deeply complex and conflicted personality forged by a lifetime of disappointment. His core personality is a paradox; while thoroughly cynical and nihilistic, he also retains a protective and devoted nature that surfaces despite his claims of indifference. This contradiction makes him a difficult figure to simply dismiss or hate.
Archer's primary motivation in the Holy Grail War is not victory but the elimination of his own past self, Shirou Emiya. He views the ideal of becoming a hero of justice, the very dream he inherited from his adoptive father Kiritsugu Emiya, as a fundamental mistake. Having experienced the endless, bloody task of being a Counter Guardian—where saving the many requires sacrificing the few—he has come to despise the naive idealism he once held. He believes that by killing Shirou, he can create a temporal paradox large enough to erase his own existence as a Counter Guardian, thus freeing himself from eternal servitude. His disdain for Shirou is particularly sharp, as he sees in the boy's unwavering commitment to saving everyone a childish and impossible fantasy that will only lead to pain and betrayal.
In the story, Archer serves as Rin's Servant, initially acting as a capable and strategic ally. He plays a crucial role in the prologue, fighting Lancer to protect Rin and observing the events that unfold. His role changes significantly depending on the narrative path. In the Fate route, he is a mysterious figure who sacrifices himself in a battle against the monstrous Servant Berserker, managing to take the enemy's life several times before perishing and offering Shirou cryptic advice. In the Unlimited Blade Works route, his true nature and goals are revealed as he betrays Rin to ally with the Servant Caster, not out of loyalty but as a calculated step to free himself from his contract so he can confront Shirou directly. In the Heaven's Feel route, his role is more observational; he recognizes a fundamental shift in Shirou when the boy chooses to protect Sakura Matou above all else, seeing that this version of himself has abandoned the ideal he came to hate, making his intervention unnecessary.
Key relationships define his character. His bond with his Master, Rin Tohsaka, is complex and tinged with a deep, almost maddened affection; he remembers her name instantly upon hearing it again and his very attire as a Servant is an homage to her. The central and most explosive relationship is with Shirou Emiya. Archer is Shirou from a failed future, and their conflict is a physical and ideological war against the self. Archer seeks to crush Shirou's hope and kill him to prevent his own suffering, while Shirou's refusal to give up his ideals forces Archer to confront the man he used to be. His relationship with his adoptive sister, Illyasviel von Einzbern, is also hinted at, as he recognizes her and calls her by the familiar name Illya during his fight with Berserker.
Character development for Archer is most pronounced in the Unlimited Blade Works route. After a climactic battle where Shirou defeats him by clinging to his ideals, Archer undergoes a significant change. He is forced to remember the初衷 of his dream—the desire to see everyone smile, not the endless slaughter that followed. Shirou's unwavering stance proves that even a flawed, impossible ideal has value in its pursuit. Defeated but not broken, Archer ultimately chooses to fight alongside Shirou against their common enemy, Gilgamesh, and in doing so, reaffirms his original wish. He accepts his existence and finds a measure of peace, deciding to once again strive for the dream of a hero of justice.
Archer possesses a unique and versatile set of abilities that defy the standard conventions of his class. While qualified as an Archer for his incredible proficiency with projectile weapons, he is also highly skilled in close-quarters combat, a deceptive advantage he uses to surprise opponents like Lancer. His primary skill is Projection magic, the ability to create temporary, physical copies of items. He elevates this skill to an unparalleled level, allowing him to perfectly replicate any weapon he has seen, down to its composition, design, and even the skills and memories of its original wielder. These copies are typically one rank lower than the original. His favored weapons are the twin Chinese blades Kanshou and Bakuya, which he uses in a unique style of dual-wielding.
His most powerful ability is his Reality Marble, a forbidden magecraft that manifests his inner world onto reality. Called Unlimited Blade Works, it materializes as a barren wasteland under a starry sky, cluttered with countless gears and a vast plain filled with every weapon he has ever copied. Within this space, he can instantly generate any weapon he desires and control them telekinetically, firing them as projectiles. He can also overload a copied Noble Phantasm with magical energy to use as a Broken Phantasm, a powerful, explosive attack that destroys the copy. Other notable abilities include Independent Action, allowing him to exist and fight without a Master for a period, and Clairvoyance, which grants him exceptional visual perception capable of tracking objects from several kilometers away. His Mind's Eye skill, honed through endless combat experience, allows him to calmly analyze a situation and find a path to victory even when only a one percent chance exists.
