Description
Kiku Takane is the older sister of the protagonist, Ryuji Takane, and serves as his dedicated boxing trainer. Following the death of their father, Go Takane, the siblings faced a difficult childhood under the care of their abusive stepfather, Tomizo. Determined to escape their circumstances and fulfill their father’s unrealized dream, Kiku took her younger brother to Tokyo. There, she took on the responsibility of training him to become a world champion, becoming the strategic mind behind his natural physical talent.

Kiku is characterized by her tenacity, intelligence, and unwavering commitment to her brother’s success. While she does not possess the same level of physical fighting ability as Ryuji, she compensates with a sharp analytical mind and a deep knowledge of boxing strategy, having inherited their father’s tactical acumen. She is a powerful presence in Ryuji’s life, acting as his maternal guardian and primary source of guidance. Her role is to provide the crucial insight and advice that Ryuji uses to overcome his various opponents throughout the series.

Her primary motivation is to transform Ryuji into a champion, a promise she made to herself and to her father’s memory. This goal drives her actions from their escape from home through to the highest levels of competition. In the story, she is present at all of her brother’s matches, offering support and tactical advice from the corner. One of the most significant relationships in her life forms with Ryuji’s rival, Jun Kenzaki. Kiku gives Jun a revitalizing talisman, and he subsequently falls in love with her, leading to their eventual engagement.

Kiku’s character undergoes notable development as the series progresses. During the Japan vs. USA arc, she makes a conscious decision to step back from her constant presence at Ryuji’s side. Acting on advice from another character, she resolves not to attend his matches, choosing instead to watch them on television, allowing her brother to stand on his own and grow independently as a fighter. In the final of the world tournament, she carries the Oath Flag to the members of the Japanese team. After their victory, she successfully raises the flag on its mast before collapsing to the ground, unconscious, having expended the last of her strength in a moment of triumph.
