Description
Jun Kenzaki is a central figure in the boxing saga Ring ni Kakero 1, initially introduced as a rival to the protagonist, Ryuji Takane. Known by the nicknames the Superstar and the Genius, Kenzaki is a boxing prodigy who comes from a wealthy and privileged background. Born on July 4, he stands at 1.64 meters tall and weighs 51 kilograms, with gray eyes and black hair worn to neck length. As the favored twin son of the Kenzaki family, he was designated the sole heir to the family fortune, a circumstance that led to his separation from his twin brother, Jun Shadow, during infancy.

Kenzaki’s personality is defined by his immense pride, competitive drive, and natural confidence in his abilities. In his early appearances, this manifests as arrogance and a dismissive attitude toward others. This is immediately evident when he first meets Ryuji Takane, as he offers to buy the boxing gloves of Ryuji’s late father and later forcibly takes them, throwing money at Ryuji to show his perceived superiority. Despite this cold exterior, he is not without depth. He maintains a generally condescending demeanor but shows selective respect, primarily acknowledging Ryuji as a worthy rival. His character also holds a princely quality, often fitting the ice king archetype of a talented and composed young man. Beneath his proud surface lie moments of genuine emotional vulnerability, such as when he mourns the sacrifice of his teammate Takeshi Kawai or expresses concern for his estranged brother.

In the story, Kenzaki serves as the primary rival who pushes Ryuji to take boxing seriously. He was designated as the representative for Tokyo in the Champion Carnival, but after losing his Brazen Arm, he stepped aside, allowing Ryuji to take his place in the hope of facing him again. His role evolves from an antagonist to a crucial ally, becoming the fifth member of the Japan Junior team alongside Ryuji, Takeshi Kawai, Kazuki Shinatora, and Ishimatsu Katori. His key relationships are central to the narrative. His rivalry with Ryuji is the driving force of the early story, culminating in a mutual respect and a deep friendship. His relationship with Kiku Takane, Ryuji’s sister, blossoms into a romance, and they eventually marry, having a son named Rindo Kenzaki. Following his death alongside Kiku, their son is raised by their teammate Ishimatsu Katori, continuing the boxing legacy in the sequel series.

Kenzaki undergoes notable development throughout the series. He begins as a supremely confident, almost arrogant, genius who believes in his own natural talent. His initial defeats and the intense battles with Ryuji teach him humility and the value of hard work. In a famous display of sportsmanship during a critical fight, after learning that Ryuji was fighting with an injured right hand, Kenzaki purposely injured his own right arm by punching a ring post to ensure the match was fought on even ground. This act demonstrates his growth from a self-centered fighter into a warrior of honor. He later travels to the United States for surgery on his arm and continues to strive to be the best boxer in the world, even in the face of physical setbacks.

Kenzaki’s abilities in the ring are extraordinary, matching his reputation as a genius. His boxing style emphasizes speed and precision, often leading to extremely fast victories. His signature techniques are the Galactica Magnum and the Galactica Phantom, devastating moves that reflect his cosmic-themed power and technical skill. The sheer force of his punches is such that he is said to be able to crush atoms. Throughout global tournaments, he faces and defeats formidable international opponents, including fighters named Führer Skörpion and Theseus, further cementing his status as a world-class boxer.
