Description
Ishimatsu Katori is a central figure in the narrative of Ring ni Kakero 1. Born on December 6, 1966, he is a teenage boxer distinguished by his small physical stature, standing at only 156 centimeters tall and weighing 45 kilograms. Despite this apparent disadvantage, he is a formidable fighter with black hair that appears as sepia in the original manga, gray-blue eyes, and tanned skin.

His background is rooted in poverty, which serves as the primary engine for his actions. Ishimatsu comes from a large, struggling family, and his motivation to become a champion boxer is driven by a desperate need to lift them out of financial hardship. This serious purpose contrasts sharply with the affluent upbringings of some of his peers and informs much of his early behavior. He possesses a fiery and temperamental personality, often reacting loudly and with a sharp, smart mouth when things do not go his way. However, beneath this volatile exterior lies an unwavering resolve; he is a fighter who never surrenders, even when the odds are overwhelmingly against him, and he is profoundly loyal and kind to those he considers allies.

Initially, Ishimatsu holds a strong disdain for two of his future teammates. He clashes with Takeshi Kawai due to Takeshi's privileged, arrogant nature and what Ishimatsu perceives as dirty boxing tactics. He also despises Kazuki Shinatora, accusing him of treating boxing as a mere hobby rather than a serious pursuit, having come from a Kendo background. Over time, these heated rivalries thaw into mutual respect as they all unite to form the Japan Junior Golden Team alongside Ryuji Takane and Jun Kenzaki. His bond with Ryuji is particularly strong, built on camaraderie, while his relationship with Jun Kenzaki is complex; at one point, he confronts Jun directly for acting distant toward Kiku Takane, resulting in a fierce fight that, while lost, earns him Jun's profound respect for his protective determination.

Throughout the story, Ishimatsu participates in numerous high-stakes tournaments, including the Champion Carnival, the Pacific War against the American team, and the World Tournament, where he faces opponents from Italy, France, Germany, and the legendary Twelve Gods of Greece. His fighting style is one of agility and precision, designed to overcome larger, heavier opponents. He masters several signature techniques, including the Hurricane Bolt, the Sky Triple Dancing, and the Spiral Typhon. His philosophy on boxing is encapsulated in his creed that fists must catch dreams, rejecting violence for its own sake and framing the sport as a ladder for personal and familial ascension.

Ishimatsu undergoes significant development from a brash, temperamental boy into a symbol of perseverance and a mentor. After the main juniors retire from boxing, his story continues in the sequel, Ring ni Kakero 2. Following the tragic deaths of Jun Kenzaki and Kiku Takane, Ishimatsu steps forward to become the guardian of their orphaned son. He names the child Rindo Kenzaki and dedicates himself to raising and mentoring the boy, channeling the legacy of Rindo's parents into his training and passing on his own boxing philosophy to the next generation.
