TV-Series
Description
Keisaku Sato is a fifteen-year-old high school student who becomes a close ally to the Flame Haze Margery Daw. Physically, Keisaku is a young man with light-brown hair that falls to his neck, a fair complexion, and dark blue eyes. He comes from a wealthy, independent family, a circumstance that provides a significant practical resource for the series' other characters, as his house frequently serves as a base of operations and a place to stay for Margery Daw.
Keisaku's personality presents notable differences between the original source material and the anime adaptation. In the light novels, he is characterized as cheerful and sociable, often acting as a lively presence among his friends and classmates. The anime reimagines him as more standoffish and rough, with a reputation from his junior high school days for being somewhat unruly. However, after he begins spending time with his friend Eita Tanaka, he gradually becomes calmer and more sociable. Over the course of the story, he grows to become friends with the protagonist Yuji Sakai and others in their circle.
Keisaku's motivations are deeply tied to his admiration for and relationship with Margery Daw. When the powerful Flame Haze first arrived in Misaki City, she randomly selected him and his friend Eita to act as her guides. After the two discovered a magical map of the city left behind by a defeated Crimson Denizen, they began acting as support for her. Keisaku develops strong feelings for Margery, though he tends to hide them initially. Despite being a normal human without supernatural powers, he harbors a desire to become a Flame Haze like Margery and Shana, driven by a wish to fight alongside them. This desire is partly fueled by seeing Yuji as a rival after learning that Yuji was being personally trained by Shana and another Flame Haze named Wilhelmina Carmel.
In the broader story, Keisaku's primary role is that of a human supporter and companion to a Flame Haze. While he and Eita are not combatants, they provide crucial non-violent assistance, such as navigation using the magical map. His house serves as a safe haven and living quarters for Margery Daw, highlighting his importance as a logistical anchor. He is a representative of the ordinary humans who become entangled in the secret war between Flame Hazes and Crimson Denizens, choosing to offer help in whatever way he can.
Keisaku's key relationships define his character arc. His bond with Eita Tanaka is that of a close friend and partner, as the two often skip class together and work as a team to support Margery. His relationship with Yuji Sakai is one of initial rivalry, born from jealousy over Yuji's privileged training as a Mystes, but it matures into acceptance and friendship as Keisaku comes to terms with his own path. The most significant relationship is with Margery Daw. She becomes a central figure in his life, living in his home. When Margery is later put into a comatose state, Keisaku is identified as the only person who can reach her. He goes to her, kisses her, and confesses his love, successfully waking her and giving her a renewed reason to live, which deepens their bond considerably.
Keisaku experiences a notable character development throughout the series. Initially frustrated by his inability to fight like a Flame Haze and envious of Yuji's position, he eventually comes to accept his own limitations and strengths. Instead of dwelling on what he cannot do, he decides to focus on what he can do. He resolves to study harder and changes schools with the specific goal of one day working at the Outlaw, a mysterious organization, to support Margery Daw through non-combat means. This decision marks his maturity, as he abandons a fruitless dream of gaining supernatural power and instead pursues a practical path to remain by her side.
As a normal human, Keisaku does not possess any supernatural abilities, combat skills, or powers of his own. He cannot use the Power of Existence, create a Fuzetsu, or fight Crimson Denizens directly. His notable contributions come from his ordinary human resources and dedication: his family's wealth, his home as a shelter, his willingness to learn and help, and his emotional strength, particularly his ability to reach Margery Daw when her own power and will are failing. His true capability lies in his loyalty and his decision to find a meaningful role in a world far larger and more dangerous than his own.
