Description
Azusa Yumi is a supporting character in Soul Eater, recognized as the Death Scythe responsible for overseeing the East Asia region, and later temporarily Oceania as well. She is a Demon Weapon who transforms into a unique crossbow-like sniper rifle, combining elements of a musket and a scope. Her physical appearance is neat and formal, featuring short, straight black hair and a pair of simple framed glasses that accentuate her intellectual demeanor.

Her personality is defined by being bookish, analytical, and extremely respectful in her interactions. However, beneath this polite exterior lies a natural leader with a bossy and authoritative streak. This side of her character is a remnant of her days as a student at the DWMA, where she served as the student council president. Her former classmates, including Spirit Albarn and Franken Stein, recall her as a small but talkative child who constantly scolded them for their behavior, namely Spirit's flirting and Stein's obsessive urge to dissect things. This dynamic has continued into the present, as she still treats her peers like children, clapping her hands to get their attention or telling them to line up, much to their embarrassment. Spirit himself has described her as a bossy little brat, a sentiment with which Stein agrees.

Azusa is a figure of immense competence and intellect. It is suggested that she has a genius-level IQ, and she functions as an extremely capable information gatherer and tactician. Her primary contribution in the field comes from her unique clairvoyant ability known as the Thousand-Mile Eyes. This power allows her to synchronize her soul with a distant meister through a telephone or radio, a technique called telesynchronization. Once linked, she can see everything within a certain radius of that person, with a high degree of precision. This ability is not merely for observation; she can also use it to calculate precise distances, read the souls of individuals to determine their age and strength, and even link her vision to other witches or meisters to translate foreign texts. When using this ability, she can move at incredible speeds and retain vast amounts of spatial information almost instantly.

In her weapon form, Azusa's abilities are purely offensive and complement her role as a sniper. She can compress a meister's soul wavelength and fire it as a high-pressure spirit shot with extraordinary accuracy. Her stated proficiency is such that she can hit a target from up to ten kilometers away with a margin of error of less than one millimeter. This precision, combined with her tactical mind, makes her an invaluable asset for long-range support and reconnaissance.

Within the story, Azusa is called back to the DWMA following the revival of the Kishin. She is tasked with using her clairvoyant abilities to search for the escaped Asura. She also plays a supervisory role for the Spartoi group during their mission to investigate Medusa's abandoned laboratory in Africa. From her headquarters, she uses her Senrigan to transcribe documents and guide the young meisters through dangerous situations, directing them away from hostile villagers and coordinating their movements. She is also involved in the internal investigation to locate a traitor within the academy, where she provides detailed information about her missions and the suspicious behavior of another Death Scythe, Justin Law.

Azusa maintains several key relationships with the other death scythes and staff. She is good friends with Marie Mjolnir, though their relationship is characterized by a serious-and-clueless dynamic, with Azusa often having to talk Marie out of absurd ideas, such as marrying a toilet. She also occasionally acts as a partner to the zombie meister Sid Barett, providing tactical and long-range support. Her leadership style is respected by younger weapon types, such as Liz Thompson, who considers her an idol for gun-type weapons.
