TV-Series
Description
Kim Diehl is a meister and a student at the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA), though this is a carefully constructed identity. Her true name is Kimial Diehl, and she is a witch who secretly fled from the Witches' Realm to attend the school. Her animal theme is the tanuki, a creature from Japanese folklore, which is appropriate given her personality and abilities.
Kim’s background is central to understanding her character. She was born a witch, but she hated the world of witches and ran away. The primary reason for her rejection from witch society was the nature of her magic. While most witches are driven by a destructive instinct known as the "sway of magic," Kim possesses regenerative and healing magic, which goes against this destructive norm. Because of this, she was cast out and faced hatred from her fellow witches. In response, she sought refuge at the DWMA, cutting her hair, dressing like a boy, and avoiding others in an attempt to cut her ties to being a witch and live a normal life.
Her past experiences have shaped a complex personality. Kim is deeply self-conscious and lives in constant fear of rejection, afraid that the DWMA and her friends would scorn her if they discovered she was a witch. This fear of not being accepted has led her to depend on money, as she rationalizes that money does not discriminate between the people who hold it. Consequently, she is obsessed with making money and is known for her manipulative and extortionate behavior. She frequently bullies fellow students into paying her for services, whether it is for rescue, healing, or even simple tasks, and she often remarks that she should be getting paid for any good deed she performs. This behavior has earned her the nickname "the Witch of the Girls' Dorm." Despite this greedy and sometimes antagonistic exterior, Kim desires companionship and friendship but struggles to trust others due to her deep-seated insecurities.
Kim’s role in the story is that of a supporting character who navigates the complexities of her dual identity. After Medusa exposes her as a witch to the DWMA, Kim panics and flees the academy with her weapon partner, Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupré. In her desperation to find a place where she would be accepted, she reluctantly joins the organization Arachnophobia, which serves the witch Arachne. However, she is betrayed and subjected to a Morality Manipulation Machine that brainwashes her. During the DWMA's assault on Arachnophobia's castle, a fellow student named Ox Ford risks his life to break her free from the brainwashing, showing her that she does have a place to belong. After this incident, she is allowed to return to the DWMA and is later promoted to a Two-Star Meister and a member of the elite unit Spartoi.
Kim’s key relationships are crucial to her development. Her most important bond is with her weapon partner, Jacqueline, who is fully aware that Kim is a witch from the start. Jacqueline reacts with compassion and remains fiercely loyal to Kim, keeping her secret and even fleeing with her to Arachnophobia. This loyalty is a significant factor in Kim slowly learning to trust others. Another pivotal relationship is with Ox Ford, who constantly expresses his romantic affection for her. Kim initially turns him down because he is not rich and finds him creepy, but she appreciates his devotion. When Ox sacrifices himself to save her from Arachnophobia, she finally begins to reciprocate his feelings and understand that he offers her a genuine place to belong.
Throughout the series, Kim shows notable development from a girl consumed by fear and greed to someone who begins to accept friendship and a sense of belonging. Her self-doubt and fear of rejection are slowly tempered by the loyalty of Jacqueline and the devotion of Ox. After being rescued and accepted back into the DWMA, she expresses concern about being hunted like another witch, Crona, but also proposes using her regenerative magic to help protect a young witch named Angela from developing destructive instincts, showing a willingness to use her powers for the good of her new home.
Kim’s notable abilities are rooted in her nature as a Tanuki Witch. Her primary and most unique power is regeneration magic, which allows her to heal both herself and others from injuries. This healing capability is rare among witches and is the reason she was cast out of witch society. As a meister, her weapon partner is Jacqueline, who transforms into a lantern. Together, they can perform techniques such as Change Pixy, which transforms Jacqueline into a rocket-powered broom for flight, and Wollantern, an attack where Jacqueline's lantern form explodes on contact with an enemy. She also participates in powerful combination attacks with other meisters, such as a technique that requires a Chain Resonance to produce a devastating widespread blast.
