Description
Nunnally Vi Britannia is the younger sister of Lelouch Vi Britannia and the daughter of Emperor Charles zi Britannia and Marianne vi Britannia. Born into the Holy Britannian Empire on October 25, she was once a princess and stood eighty-seventh in line of succession to the imperial throne. During her early childhood, she lived with her mother and older brother at the Imperial Aries Villa, where she formed close bonds with them and with her half-sister Euphemia li Britannia. When Marianne was assassinated, Nunnally was caught in the attack and left paralyzed from the waist down, requiring a wheelchair. She also lost her eyesight, which was believed at first to be the result of psychological trauma from witnessing the murder; it was later disclosed that her blindness had actually been induced by her father's Geass in an effort to shield her from harm. Her father regarded her as weak and only useful for a political marriage, and after a confrontation over their mother's death, Nunnally and Lelouch were sent to Japan as political hostages. Following the Britannian invasion of Japan, the siblings adopted the surname Lamperouge and were taken in by the Ashford family, with Nunnally attending the middle school division of Ashford Academy under her false identity.
Nunnally is characterized by her gentle, kind, and patient nature. Despite the hardship she has endured, she remains hopeful and believes that people can be good, a conviction that sets her apart from the cynicism that surrounds her. She is deeply empathetic and perceptive, able to sense when someone is lying simply by holding their hand. Lelouch once reflected that her constant smile was rooted in gratitude, since her blindness left her dependent on the kindness of others. She enjoys quiet moments, peaceful times, and the scent of flowers, and she dislikes loud noises. Even without sight, she retains an appreciation for drawing, as shown by pictures she makes of places she remembers.
Her central motivation is the desire for a peaceful world, both for herself and for the people around her, especially her brother. After the death of Euphemia, she adopts her half-sister's wish to bring about change through compassion rather than force, hoping to revive the Special Administrative Zone of Japan as a place where Japanese and Britannians can coexist. In the second season, this conviction drives her to take up the position of Viceroy of Area 11 and to pursue reforms that protect ordinary citizens, even when her advisors resist. Later, her motivation shifts toward taking responsibility for her brother's actions, and after the events of the final confrontation, she dedicates herself to maintaining world peace as an honorary advisor to the World Humanitarian Organization.
Her role in the story changes considerably over the course of the second season. After being kidnapped near the end of the first season, her existence is erased from the memories of those who knew her, including Lelouch, and Rolo Lamperouge is placed in her position as Lelouch's younger brother. She returns to prominence as the newly appointed Viceroy of Area 11, still remembering Lelouch and unaware that he operates as Zero. She works to carry on Euphemia's legacy, and she shows kindness to Kallen Kozuki by moving her to a better facility and providing her with proper clothing. During the Second Battle of Tokyo, she is believed to have been killed in the blast of the F.L.E.I.J.A. weapon, but she survives by taking a different transport and reappears aboard the floating fortress Damocles. There she is backed by Schneizel el Britannia as a candidate for the imperial throne and declares herself an enemy of Lelouch, insisting on holding the launch key for the F.L.E.I.J.A. warheads so she can personally atone for what she sees as his sins. She is disturbed by how easily the weapon brings death, and when Lelouch reaches the Damocles, she breaks her father's Geass through her own willpower and regains the ability to see. Lelouch then uses his own Geass to take the key from her, telling her that he loves her, though she does not remember those words and later calls him a demon as he leaves. After his death and the revelation of his true intentions, she comes to understand his sacrifice and works to preserve the world he created.
Her relationship with Lelouch is the emotional core of her character. The two share mutual devotion, and Nunnally has stated that she loves her brother more than anyone else. He in turn views her as his reason for changing the world, and much of his actions are driven by the wish to create a place where she can live in peace. In the second season, that bond becomes complicated as she opposes his methods, but it ultimately remains rooted in love and understanding. She is also extremely fond of Suzaku Kururugi, who was her friend from the time the siblings lived in Japan, and she is overjoyed when he joins them at Ashford Academy. Later, she realizes that Suzaku is not being truthful with her, and the relationship becomes strained by the secrets he keeps. Sayoko Shinozaki serves as her primary caretaker, and Euphemia remains an important influence whose peaceful ideals she strives to honor. Schneizel, by contrast, manipulates her for his own ambitions while presenting her as the rightful heir.
Nunnally possesses no combat abilities or supernatural powers of her own. Her strength lies in her emotional intelligence, her empathy, and her capacity to inspire trust and hope in those around her. Her ability to detect deception through physical contact is a notable skill, as is her resilience, demonstrated when she breaks her father's Geass through sheer will. Although physically dependent on others for mobility, she develops into a figure of political authority and moral influence, showing that her value lies not in the strength of her body but in the strength of her convictions.
